Lost connection to drive, yet "Secure"

I might have asked about this before, but:

(1) CD rips a few tracks
(2) Sometimes, for reasons unknown to me, the drive will speed down to e.g. 0.4x or 0.1x.
(3) This time it then for sudden speeded up to 107x and finished the track, encoded it and displayed it as "Secure". Obviously wrong, and the file was a 5 kB empty.

Wish: Rip Status "Error" when such things happen.

When a drive errors out like that it does not return an error to the program, rather all 0's as audio data.

And there is no way to try to communicate with the drive?

(Hm, would it help? Last time this thing happened, the next track worked OK :-/ )

Related, but only a matter of logging: I had a power outage here, affecting the CD changer but my laptop (which has a battery too).

So there are obviously errors in some tracks, confirmed by the post-ripping status screen and the .log file. But look at the last line of the log file:
