    WMA tags not written correctly

I'm having a bit of trouble transcoding from highquality mp3 to lower quality WMA. Basically, everything seems to work ok except for the track number. Either A) The tracknumber shows up correctly on my PC but isn't recognised on my Creative Vision M or B) The tracknumbers seem to get decremented by one on each track and show up on my Vision M (i.e. tracknumbers start at 0 instead of 1).

Any idea what i'm doing wrong? I noticed there was a setting to choose whether you want to use Track or TrackNumber for WMA files, and i've tried all three settings, but nothing seems to work reliably.

Make sure you are using dMC r11.5. Version numbers are in dMC Configuration, found in your Start Menu under Programs --> dBpowerAMP Music Converter --> Configuration --> dMC Configuration

Yup, got version 11.5 here. I installed V9.1 originally of the codec, and i don't think i can uninstall it and install V9. I tried, but i don't think it worked.

Just a quick upate on the situation.

I made sure i have V9.1 of the codec installed, then went into the dmc configuration settings. In the last page if set it to "WM/TrackNumber & WM/Track" or just "WM/TRACK", my track numbers appear. However they are 1 less than what they should be. i.e. track 1 is now track 0. Track 15 is now track 14 etc. If i leave it on "WM/TrackNumber" only, then nothing appears on my mp3 player.

But if i view the same files on my computer, they show up with the correct track number. Is this a bug with DMC or do i need to start annoying creative? Initially i assumed bug with DMC, but now i'm not so sure.

Try the files created in Windows Media Player, if it reads the track number correctly then it is creative with the bug.

Yup, a windows media player created file works perfectly. So it seems to be a bug in dMC alright.

What version of Windows Media Player have you got?

Did it have the same track number error with your files created with dMC?

It's version 9.0.0.3250. And as i said in my previous post, the track number was fine in the WMP created WMA. The same file converted with DMC resulted in a "corrupt" tag. I say "corrupt" as the tag appears fine on my computer, but doesn't appear correctly on my mp3 player.

What options are you specifying when you transcode/rip to wma?

When I rip or transcode to wma the track number is correct, though I do have WMP 10 installed.

Here is an extract from my dMC configuration:

                  dBpowerAMP Music Converter: Release 11.5
                  Power Pack & Mp3 License: [ Registered: Yes ]
dBpowerAMP Audio Player: Release 3 Beta 6

                  ===Codecs===
                  Installed Compression Codecs (Write)
                  Windows Media Audio V9.1: Release 1 [ .wma ]

                  Installed Input Codecs (Read)
Windows Media Audio Input Decoder: .wma; .asf; .wmv

                  ===ID Tag Options===
                  Windows Media Audio
                  Write Track Number as: WM/TrackNumber

If you are indeed running WMP v 9, then you should be using the WMA v9 codec (the wma v9.1 codec is designed for wmp 10). You can install this codec without having to uninstall the wma v 9.1 codec.

While I cannot guarantee that this will fix your situation, I do think it would be a step in the right direction.

                    Best wishes,
                    Bill

25% VBR WMA retaining the tags, plus the options i mentioned above.

I am running WMP V9 and i've tried both 9.0 and 9.1. Version 9.1 is designed for windows XP and higher, not WMP10 specifically. But even still it shouldn't make a difference. Either way, it doesnt' work.

Creating a WMA manually in WMP works. The tags show up fine on my computer and player. Creating a WMA in DBPoweramp doesn't work. The tracknumber shows up fine on my PC but not on my player. Hence i suspect a bug in DMC when it writes a WMA tag.

You did install the WMA 9/9.1 System codecs, correct? For WMA 9, they are a separate download. For WMA 9.1, the installer pops up during the dMC WMA installer.

Ok, so since there didn't seem to be much activity on the thread and i had a bit of spare time i decided to see if i could see where the problem is. Turns out DBPowerAmp is writing the wrong value for WM/Track, and this is the tag my MP3 player uses for determining track number.

Opening the same file encoded using DBPowerAmp and WMP i can plainly see that the WMP encoded file has the value '1' for both WM/Track and WM/TrackNumber whereas the DBPowerAmp encoded file has '1' for WM/TrackNumber and '0' for WM/Track.

If you want a dump of the hex i can email it to any address you want.

                            Thanks.

That is correct as per microsofts documents:

                              WM/Track
The WM/Track attribute contains the track number of the content. This attribute is zero-based and is supported for backward compatibility

                              WM/TrackNumber
The WM/TrackNumber attribute contains the track number of the content. This attribute is 1-based

                              taken from the WMA SDK.
