Opera press releases
The one million download challenge of Opera 8:
Opera's CEO will swim from Norway to the USA
Oslo, Norway - April 21, 2005
An overly excited Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software, today proclaimed at an internal company meeting that if the download numbers of the new Opera 8 Web browser reach 1 million within the first four days of the launch, he will swim from Norway to the USA with only one stop-over for a cup of hot chocolate at his mother's house in his home country, Iceland. Opera's communications department could obviously not resist to make such a bold and inarguably over-confident statement public.
Opera's new Web browser, Opera 8, was released Tuesday, and the massive response had Opera's download servers kneeling an hour after the launch. Still, the download numbers of Opera 8 reached 600 000 in the first 48 hours.
For those using 8, having any problems?
This is the first release from them that has given me fits. Memory leak, high cpu usage, sudden shut downs, and a bunch of other little things. They seem to be aware of them.
If I had the install for the last beta around, I'd go back to it (Knew I shoulda kept it).
Oh well, hopefuly the get it sorted out soon.
I only use Opera simply to test my web pages in it. I am defintely not fond of the experience. The same as Firefox and Netscape - just a tool to see the "other" world.
At least they have fixed some features which means simply that now it joins Netscape and Firefox in crapping out on the same stuff rather than in different spots. :D
I have a particular web page which cannot be rendered proeprly by either of those magnificent anti-Microsoft programs: FF, NS and Opera. The page works perfectly well in IE. The gurus have not found the problem at all, everyhting appears to be exactly as the mighty w3c dictates it should be - yet they don't work. The best advice they were able to give me was to change the way I want the page to look. Well, duh, that's not what I want to do! :vmad:
i haven't had any ver8 problems like that. i am 14 hours into an email import though and it's only halfway there. 50,000 emails so far.
you want the last beta version? i can upoload it and give you a link if you want?
What beta version? They just brought out Ver 8 and now a beta too?Originally Posted by Razgo
For my needs all 3 of the browsers will have to get their act together or it's no-go just the same.
Razgo is referring to the last beta before the final v8 was released.
LOL! Ok, it must have been for the post before mine :DOriginally Posted by LtData

here is ver 8 beta 3 if you think its more stable. beta3 ver 8
Wow, thanks Razgo
Sorry, though, If I had been online this weekend, I would have said no need to do that. Blame my girlfriend and her painting needs
I am gonna grab it though just in case...8 final is not nearly as unstable as it was for me (did a little maintence)...but, that memory leak and CPU usage still happens.
Thanks again
PS. Christina, meant to mention this earlier...but, I;m a fellow Canuk... Posting in Moncton, New Brunswick
EDIT: I have the file now, Razgo...take it down, if you like..thanks!

Well, I ended up going back to the beta. 8.0 was just to unstable in my case.
So, just wanted to say thanks again to Razgo
