    m4a to mp3

Unsuccessful attempts to convert m4a to mp3 (or flac). "Error valid mp3 frame not found"
Searching the forum it seems possible my version of dBPoweramp is too old. I first bought a license in 2011 and again in 2015 (family pack). In Music Converter I don't see which version I have. But I'm pretty sure m4a was a thing by 2015 so surprised Music Converter is having problems. please help!

You could try the latest version, if you uninstall the existing, it will function as the free version which can create flac files from m4a.

You mentioned that the files are m4a and when downloaded appear as mp3. The file you sent was .m4a and contained AAC audio, nothing to do with mp3. Perhaps you have something on your system installed which is changing all m4a files?

The file downloaded and converted without issue to wave.

Hmmm, I get the same error when I try to convert to wave.

              Try this, safemode with networking:

This should ensure nothing is running which is altering the files. You should download the file as .m4a and then it should convert.

Check the extension is .m4a also.

I am running Windows 7. Is that the problem?

Same error in safe mode, Windows 7.
It's maddening. Sometimes I can play the files with Windows Media Player, mostly not. Sometimes I can edit the tags, mostly not.The file properties indicates they are mp3 but it says m4a before I download.

Ultimately, I want to get these on my Pono player. I've copied them to the Pono a couple of times, and I can see the folder and files with the Pono connected to my PC, but they don't show up on the Pono navigation.

I'm not able to display the extension alone but the file type, file name, and properties all show the files as mp3. So, you were able to convert to *.wav?

The file you sent to me was .m4a, it converted without issues, if it was saved as .mp3 on your system then the converter would not work.

Maybe a screenshot showing the properties would help?

Enable file extensions in Windows File Explorer and rename the .mp3 to .m4a and dBpoweramp would recognize it.
