CODEC required could not be opened

I've seen a few references to this problem on Usenet, but so far no
    solutions.

I have Dbpoweramp installed (no PowerPack) with a number of codecs. So far, it has always worked fine for me. But now when I try to convert a file, the programme suddenly says 'The CODEC required to convert xxx could not be opened'. I first noticed it when I tried to convert an mp3 to a WAV. I haven't checked all the other formats, but trying out one or two seemed to suggest that the problem is programme wide, i.e. it's not restricted to the wav-writer codec.

The required codecs are certainly available, and I've already tried
uninstalling and reinstalling the programme, but that doesn't help.

Does anybody have an idea what the problem might be?

    It should be either:

    'The CODEC required to compress

    or

    'The CODEC required to decompress

    ?

Sorry. It's 'the codec to decompress' that can't be opened.

Compressing from wav to, for instance, mp3, does seem to work.

(And maybe I should say that this is on a WinXP system.)

Convert any wave file to mp3 using dMC, then try to convert that mp3 to wave, still get the error?

Try uninstalling dMC, then install the latest version.

Re: CODEC required could not be opened

I had some wma files that I converted to wave (24 bit), then tried to convert to mp3. The built in codec wouldn't work; I had to download the Lame encoder, but it doesn't encode near as fast.

Somehow try reinstalling Windows. I had this problem before, but after installing Windows again, dMC now works.

Re-installing Windows is a little drastic.

From memory, unless there've been some changes recently, conversions are best done from a 16-bit wav file to other formats. 24-bit wav is not handled properly for all conversions. (Sorry, I can't check all this stuff out properly since I don't have dMC on this particular pc right now and I'm also on a dial-up connection and can't easily download all the software to test it.)

Re: CODEC required could not be opened

I'm have the exact same problem converting FLAC files (codec could not be opened). I've now tried:
-uninstalling and reinstalling dbAmp and codecs (on both PCs)
-using multiple FLAC files from different sources (on both PCs)

No luck. I know the FLACs are good because I ended up converting them with with the WinAmp/ Nero plugin. I'd rather use the dbAmp.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with FLAC. All the other file types work fine.

Re: CODEC required could not be opened

As a test, find a wave file and use dBpowerAMP to create a FLAC file, then see if that FLAC file will convert?

Re: CODEC required could not be opened

I'm having the same problem converting .wavs to .mp3 (any setting). I get "The CODEC required to compress 'D:\MP3s\Poppies-bedtest.mp3' could not be opened." This with version 9 and now v. 10. Am I correct that the only codecs required are in the dB program folder? The only recent changes to my machine were updating my M-Audio Audiophile drivers to v. .0042. Thanks for any help!?

Re: CODEC required could not be opened-FOUND PROBLEM!

In my case, the problem was that I was trying to convert 24 bit .wav files. 16 bit works fine. Is there a codec I could add to do 24s?
