    difference between replaygain(apply) and volume normalize

    Hi Guys

    This is my first forum post so please let me know if I'm not following the rules.

    I am ripping cds to mp3 for use on iphone only and am using:
    1. replaygain dsp with -6.90 LUF (-18 is way too low me) and itunes track, album gain and track normalization to add the tags.
    2. After that I am doing replaygain(apply) to make the file louder with either 3 or 6 db since it is really low with soundcheck turned on on my iphone.

    I have tried volume normalize with similar settings but it didn't sound as good to my ears as using replaygain(apply).


    I guess my question is what is the best way to rip cds for use on an iphone only with sound check turned on to get the absolute maximum undistorted volume? especially for older albums with low recording levels.

    If you were to use foobar2000 mobile, you would just need the replaygain dsp effect to write the tags, the player adjusts the volume on playback from the tags.
