Using dither when upsampling?

Hi all,

I probably have not grasped the concept of dither but if I am upsampling a file from 16bit/44.1khz to 24bit/96khz should I be using any other DSP effect than the upsampling/bitdepth options?

If you disregard any reason whatsoever why someone would upsample a 16/44.1 file to 24/96, should I use dither? I have read that one should use dither when downsampling from say 32bit to 16bit. I just would like to know.

Digital upsampling gives you no more information, but only more signal. In other words: it is the same audio quality but with a bigger file size.

It is a time consuming process, you gain nothing and lose disk space, so I was simply interested in why you would want to upsample a 16-bit/44.1KHz file.

In dBpoweramp, Triangular dither is the recommended/preferred option.
