Dithering question

Hi all, I have a question about dithering. I have some 24-192 FLAC which i am converting to 16/44 ALAC in 2 steps: resampling, bit depth with triangular dither last. However, the sound is a bit muffled and sometimes my speakers are struggling on the bass, especially with the dithered version of 'come together'. I was wondering if i NEED TO CONVERT 24-BIT TO 32-BIT first before downsampling? or use rectangular dither? Spoon?

Let me rephrase that a bit. Am i wasting time resampling to 32-bit float? Does dbpoweramp do it automatically when downsampling 24-bit audio to 16/44?
