    Question Re: Genre / Style

    Hi,

I have just ripped a Sugarbabes CD ('Taller In More Ways'):

I have set the GENRE as 'Pop'. But for STYLE, I have seen various spellings across certain music sources I have referenced. Should it be written as:

Electropop, Electro Pop, Electro-Pop, or Electro-pop, please?

I have gone with the former for the sake of getting the disc ripped.

    Cheers,

    Paul

There is no right answer. Pick the spelling you prefer.

I will keep it as: Electropop then.

    Question Re: Genre / Style

    Hi,

I am ripping a CD by Emerson, Lake & Palmer ('Trilogy'):

I have stated the GENRE as 'Prog. Rock', but I am really not sure what to use for STYLE, please?

    Rock, Jazz-Rock, Classical-Rock; Folk?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Do you use Style as a subgenre? If so, it makes no sense to use "Rock" as style when you have "Progressive Rock" as the genre. It would be better the other way around.

This comes down to preference of course, but I see Style as a subgenre. The wiki link doesn't state any style, so in that case genre and style would be the same thing (Progressive Rock).

I don't have this CD or anything by ELP, but to me they don't feel like Folk but more like your other options + maybe Symphonic Rock or Art Rock.

    Folk? No. No, no, no.

Stylistically, Trilogy is scattered across the map. I would let the Genre tag suffice and leave Style empty.

    JH,

I have always felt that: "I Believe In Father Xmas" (from ELPs 'Works' CD) fell under the category of 'Folk':

And similarly, there is also the middle-section of: 'Pictures ... Exhibition'. Some may disagree though.

    evasv,

    Yes, I view STYLE as a sub-genre.

I think I have seen the term: 'Symphonic Rock' somewhere before; possibly when looking up early 'Genesis'. I may use this for 'ELP' and 'Genesis' STYLE.

    Hi Paul,

Just checked my ELP and Genesis, and they are in Progressive Rock, alongside bands like Camel, Caravan, The Enid and Gentle Giant. Symphonic Rock, could have been used, but good old prog rock is more generic, and I have never heard of a Symphonic Rock Festival!

    Hi Oggy,

'Symphonic Rock' seems to be recognised to a certain degree and there is also Wiki page for it. I have some other bands like 'Crimson King', 'The Nice', 'Frank Zappa', etc and so I am going to use 'Symphonic Rock' for the STYLE; keeping 'Prog. Rock' as the GENRE.

There is also 'Art Rock', which is, apparently, used for Bowie.

Depending on how you see it, symphonic rock could be included in progressive rock. In any case, the latter is a much wider term.

    evasv,

Some of my decision making is influenced by what my own personal CD collection consists of. I think I should be able to minimise the amount of GENREs I have because the content does not stretch as wide as most peoples collection.

Yes, not overdoing the genres is rational I think. It's easy to get too many.

I would rather have more STYLE tags than GENREs.
