I am ripping the Mendelssohn CD:

Actually, I knew this question was going to crop-up because I am aware I have quite a few CDs (mostly by Haydn) falling into this category.

And so, many symphonies have an alternative/informal title (call it what you will):

The Creation

The London Symphony

The Clock Symphony

Do users include this nickname?; and if so, do they list it within parenthesis, inverted-commas, instead or as well as the official title? For example, in this particular scenario:

Symphony No.3 (Scottish) in A Minor

The Scottish Symphony, in A Minor

Symphony No.3 in A Minor 'Scottish'

In any event, my plan is to position the 'movement' and 'Op.' data directly after (so as to maintain consistency with all previous classicals):

Symphony No.3 (Scottish) in A Minor: iii. Adagio (Op. 56)

Hi,

With respect the the same Mendelssohn CD, I am not sure how to list the Album-Title (and that of the parent-folder). For all of my previous classical rips, I have included - where one exists - the Opus No. For example:

Holst; The Planets (Op.32); Suite De Ballet (Op.10)

And so, for the Mendelssohn CD, would one use:

Mendelssohn: Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4 (Op.56, Op.90); The Hebrides Overture (Op.26)

Mendelssohn: Symphonies Nos. 3 (Op.56) & 4 (Op.90); The Hebrides Overture (Op.26)

Mendelssohn: Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4; The Hebrides Overture (Op.56, Op. 90, Op.26)

Mendelssohn: Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4; The Hebrides Overture (Op.56; Op. 90; Op.26)

In the latter two, you can see ';' vs. ','.

That looks good to me if you add quotes to 'Scottish'.

Hi Paul,

Obviously can only answer for myself, but if a piece has a well known name, and particularly if it is on the cover, I use it:

Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56 "Scottish"

This seems to be the convention I've seen on covers, and apart from the fact that your cover has all first letters capitalised, is what Sony used.

I remember "Fingal's Cave" from school, and surely everyone knows "Pastoral"

OK, I will include it then.

However, I prefer the 'Op.' to always be at the end, and the informal name to be adjacent to the symphony no. And so, admittedly, I have broken convention with the latter.

Secondly, I am not so sure if I like the use of quotation marks; I find such grammar can often look to busy on-the-eye. Though I do feel the informal name requires something; so for now, I have just used inverted-commas:

Symphony No.3 ('Scottish') in A Minor: iii. Adagio (Op. 56)

Double quotes (") are reserved for system use and cannot be used in file or folder names. Single quotes (') are okay.

Double quotes could be problematic in tags, depending on the player. I have at least one song title containing double quotes that foobar2000 handles without issue.

Yes, the ("") show fine within foobar (I just tried it). But I would need to also test out such tagging on my Amazon Fire ...

I wanted to check, please, is the CHORUS tag the correct field in which to state the CHOIR (eg. Coeur Régional Vittoria D'Ile De France)? And if so, there does not appear to be a CHORUS-SORT tag?

dBpoweramp can replace the " " with ' ' in the filenames (and all illegal Windows characters), but the " " show as expected in Foobar2000, Foobar mobile, Synology DS Audio and LMS (Logitech Media Server).

Folder names have the replaced characters, but the tags work fine in all the apps above: it would be good to know which, if any, apps do have problems?

I guess you could use a custom Choir tag, but not sure if you would need an equivalent sort tag.

Correct, there is NO corresponding sort tag, for chorus.
