... or even in numerical order:
"Mass For Four Voices; Mass For Five Voices; Infelix Ego"

I am sure record companies use the above scheme with symphonies?:
    "Beethoven Symphonies 2, 4, & 6"

Re: Tags, Tags, and more Tags ...

      Paul,
I don't have very many classical CDs, and the majority of what I have is from two series: Listener's Choice and The Masterpiece Collection. For the classical CDs that aren't in either series, I've used the spine or Discogs for the album title. For those in a series, I modify the title. For example, Discogs uses the title Bach for a CD in the Masterpiece Collection, and my album title is: "The Masterpiece Collection, Vol. 1: Bach".

Stay with your legend to remain consistent. Those with more classical experience may have other suggestions.

      Gary

        Cheers Gary,

I have about 150 classicals, I would say.

I have not modified the album-titles of any other GENRES (jazz/pop/country/soundtrack); only classicals.

Re: Tags, Tags, and more Tags ...

          Hi,

          Yet another classical brick-wall!

          I am ripping the CD:

I always thought that 'Gilbert & Sullivan' collaborated on such material (ie. one wrote the music whilst the other wrote the lyrics [libretto]). But, even though this CD has 'Gilbert & Sullivan'on the front cover, the CD is listed under the name of Sir Arthur Sullivan. I am not sure as to why Sir William Schwenck Gilbert is not fully credited?

And so, how should I tag the CD in terms of (Artist/Composer):
ALBUM ARTIST = Arthur Sullivan; William Gilbert
COMPOSER = Arthur Sullivan; William Gilbert

          or, just:
          ALBUM ARTIST = Arthur Sullivan
          COMPOSER = Arthur Sullivan

And would you include/omit (in either cases) the 'Sir'?:
ALBUM ARTIST = Sir Arthur Sullivan; Sir William Gilbert
COMPOSER = Sir Arthur Sullivan; Sir William Gilbert

Secondly, the CD credits the 'Solo Oboist' as Alaster Bently, I am sure that this can not apply to EVERY track! I could be wrong, but in my experience when such a credit is stated, there is usually a '*' informing the user which track(s) the 'Soloist' applies to.

          Many thanks,

          Paul

Re: Tags, Tags, and more Tags ...

... and, taking into account the fact that I prefer to include the surname(s) of the composer(s) - as a prefix to the album name - how would one tag this particular album, please?:
Gilbert & Sullivan: The Gilbert And Sullivan Overtures
            Gilbert & Sullivan: The Overtures
Gilbert; Sullivan: The Gilbert And Sullivan Overtures
            Gilbert; Sullivan: The Overtures

Regarding the former two, I am not sure if, in Windoze, the 'ampersand' in an illegal character?

(I have now ripped over 40 x classicals now, yet every 2 or 3 CDs throws up a new hurdle!)

            Cheers.

              Hi Paul,

I would name the album, The Gilbert And Sullivan Overtures, and apart from being the album name also covers the composer's surname.

As it is the Overtures of Gilbert And Sullivan, then it is the music, so Sir Arthur Sullivan is the sole composer.

              Artist = Sir Arthur Sullivan

Album Artist = Gilbert And Sullivan

I personally wouldn't tag the solo oboist.

                Hi Oggy,

                OK, will do.

As it is the Overtures of Gilbert And Sullivan, then it is the music, so Sir Arthur Sullivan is the sole composer.

                Artist = Sir Arthur Sullivan

This may be yet another case of having to make an exception for 'classical', but for all of the 400+ rips I have made to date, all of them (in the Artist/Album-Artist/Composer fields) have both the christian and surname of the respective Artists. And so, in your above example of Album-Artist, you have paired them together as well as omitting their christian-names!?:

Album Artist = Gilbert And Sullivan
While I can see your logic and it looks OK, I am, as always a little hesitant to make such a significant adjustment.

But at the other end of the argument, I have, at the moment:
ALBUM ARTIST = Arthur Sullivan; William Gilbert

which causes (as expected) the album to appear TWICE (ie. under each Artist) - which I really dislike (in classical)!

I personally wouldn't tag the solo oboist.
I deleted it! It's too messy.

                Cheers.

I've only ever seen Gilbert And Sullivan or Gilbert & Sullivan, so that was my thought process for Album Artist, but as ever, whatever works for you.

An ampersand can be used in Windows file names. It should be okay in tags, which are simply text, although it would not surprise me if a player somewhere has issues with it.

I tried the '&' on my PC and it reads/displays it fine in Windows and foobar.

I have followed your advice. And I chose to use 'and' instead of '&'.
