    Oggy,

    They might pop up again in the future if/when I purchase any more 'C&W' compilation CDs. I am actually looking to bump this genre up a little.

    Thanks

      Re: Tags, Tags, and more Tags ...

      Hi,

      I have finished ripping all of my 'Pop' CDs now (it took 6 weeks). I have a question regarding ARTIST and ARTISTSORT, please.

      I have been adding the word VOCAL (in brackets) after the artist's name (because I like to be able to see which albums/tracks have vocals on them):

      As I have written this after the artist's name, obviously, it shows up on every playback device (which is what you want!). For example:
      ARTIST = Bob Dylan (Vocals)

      But I am really stuck as to what I should write for ARTISTSORT:
      ARTISTSORT = Dylan, Bob (Vocals)

      Dylan, Bob, (Vocals)

      ... ie. with or without the comma ','?

      All of my ARTISTSORTs to date have simply been a juxtaposition of all the names within in the ARTIST field. For example:
      ARTIST = Miles Davis

      ARTISTSORT = Davis, Miles

      But, I am wondering if you can have an ARTISTSORT which does not contain every word/name as the former? For example (as in my case):
      ARTIST = Bob Dylan (Vocals)

      ARTISTSORT = Dylan, Bob

      I am guessing the latter would be/function fine, but I really want to check first (because it means me editing about 25 CDs).

      Many thanks in advance,

      Paul

        Re: Tags, Tags, and more Tags ...

        I'm guessing the short form ARTISTSORT (Dylan, Bob) would suffice. Anything else is superfluous.

        I would try editing one or two CDs, preferably from artists with more than one CD in your library. If you like the results, edit the rest of your pop library. If not, fiddle with them until you get what you want, then edit the others if necessary.

          Hi Paul,

          If you wish to keep (Vocal) in the filename then I agree: Dylan, Bob.

          Alternatively, you could keep Genre Pop, for vocals and add Genre Pop Instrument - giving instant lists of with without, whilst keeping Bob Dylan simple.

            Thanks Oggy,

            I actually tried out your suggestion initially when I started ripping my 'Populars' GENRE (just after Xmas). Yes, it's a good suggestion but I decided against creating another TAG. There are some 'Classical' CDs I have which include 'Vocal FX' and I wanted to make a distinction here; in this instance I intend to add: (Voice), after the Artist's name. For instance:
            Artist = Steve Reich (Voice)

            Many thanks.

              Thanks a lot JH,

              I think it is pretty certain that I am going to go along with this suggestion, thanks.

              Cheers,

              Paul

                Re: Tags, Tags, and more Tags ...

                Hi,

                All of the Artists, in my CD collection, who's title includes the word 'The', have been arranged in the following fashion (eg.):
                ARTIST = 'Mahavishnu Orchestra, The'

                ARTISTSORT = 'Mahavishnu Orchestra, The'

                So that, in the above instance, the above Artist appears, alphabetically, under the letter 'M':

                Having ripped my entire Jazz and Popular Genres, I have found that I have many more Albums, than expected, who's titles begin with the word 'The'. Using advice kindly provided in a separate thread (of last year), I arranged the Artist names as per above; but now I am thinking of also applying the same format to the NAMES of albums.

                For instance, I would like to have John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra's album:
                'The Inner Mounting Flame'

                appearing under the letter 'I', please. Can I simply rearrange the Album NAME to:
                'Inner Mounting Flame, The'

                Or do I need to create an ALBUMSORT tag, please?

                Many thanks,

                Paul

                  You can do either. But I would recommend using ALBUMSORT tag.

                    Hi Garym,

                    OK, cheers.

                    But what would you type into the ALBUM tag, please?
                    'The Inner Mounting Flame'

                    or,
                    'Inner Mounting Flame, The'

                    (as in the case of the aforementioned John McLaughlin album).

                    Thanks,

                    Paul

                        Thanks Garym,

                        So - after adding an ALBUMSORT tag - in Foobar, the ALBUM NAME still displays as follows:

                        Is that correct, please?

                        Thanks a lot.

                          Yes. It displays as The... but sorts without the the. That is the entire point of using sort tags.

                            Hi Paul,

                            That is exactly what you have asked it to do. You haven't changed the album name, so it displays as The Inner Mountain Flame, but sorts under Inner.

                              I have about 25 x CDs which will need to have an ALBUMSORT tag added. Luckily it's only a very quick job!

                              I still have not started ripping my Classical yet, though (as I have saved that Genre til last!).
