File Conversion Process clarification request

Hello,
I have a question about the Music Converter process.

When I convert a file with a resolution higher that 24 bit and 96KHz to either wav of flac Music Converter appears to default to 24 bit and 96KHz as the output format.

I can also use DSP to specify the output format I want to have the file converted to, such as 24 bit and 88.2KHz.

If I use the DSP functions does the file first get converted to 24/96 and then to 24/88.2 or do the DSP options override the defaults and convert directly to the DSP settings, such as 24/88.2?

The audio is changed during conversion, it is encoded only once.
