I have routinely run multiple malware and a/v scans on my computers for years, including active background protection.

This failure, on just the data drive, would have been unlikely for malware. WD has since confirmed it was "simply" massive hard drive failure. Apparently co-incidental.

I guess you have run a full virus scan on your system?

One obvious point, make sure you have a backup of these files (or the metadata), before attempting bulk edits.
