Encoding Question Regarding More And Less Complex Portions

The more complex portions of the song are encoded using more bits per second, the less complex portions with fewer bits per second.

What does this mean by "more complex portions" and "less complex portions"? Anyone have a song to reference that has more and less?

Re: Encoding Question Regarding More And Less Complex Portions

Parts of the song where little is going on would be less complex. The least complex would be silence, like if the music stops for a moment during the song. More complex would be where lots of stuff is happening (like several singers and instruments playing many different pitches and rhythms). The encoder doesn't need to use many bits when there isn't much going on. It needs to use more bits to encode complex parts where lots of things are happening in the song.
