    Best CD/DVD drive for ripping

I know Spoons list has not been updated recently but I am after some help in choosing a drive for ripping onto my computer with DBpoweramp.

I sont have any spare drive bays so preferably USB but could get an enclosure for an internal drive it they are best.

I have read a bit about C2 error pointers so a drive which supports this would be best I suppose ?

    Thanks.

    Can anyone help ? Please.

Or can anyone tell me of a drive which supports C2 error pointers ? Or even point me at a brand of drive which is more likely to give best results? plextor seem to be highly regarded, or is it pure lottery ?

        Thanks for the info Spoon.

I had already seen that table but didnt fully understand it.

Perhaps someone can help in that respect.

I assume that all green colums make for a better drive ? What about the sample and write offset ? Is the lowest value best, or is a high value ok so long as both values are similar, or is this just the info you need to calibrate DB Poweramp for best reults ?

As you can tell there are some gaping holes in my understanding.

        Thanks for you help.

For most people, only c2 pointers are important. Overreading is nice to have, drive offset is not hugely important.

I would say reading HTOA is important as well.

I have found the samsung drive to be fantastic performers (203 223 etc...)

Thanks Spoon and Elic. I posted this in another thread, sorry to duplicate but wasnt sure if you would see other post.

I am having difficulty finding any of the 'good' drives as listed in the DAE drives database which Spoon recomended in a previous thread.

I have spent a lot of time searching for drives listed which a) support c2pointers and b) which are still available to buy in the UK. I am at the point of buying the first drive I can find which supports C2 pointers, but I dont know how to tell if a drive supports it. Manufacturers dont seem to list this in their specs.

I have found a Samsung SH-S223c.The database lists an SH-S223Q. Does anyone know the difference between these two drives and does the 223C have C2 error support. I suspect from reading other forums that it is a different firmware or small internal change.

Can anyone give me a clue ?

Thanks, I would be pulling my hair out if I had any.

Yes, the 223C supports C2 errors.

Seems nobody wants to recommend specific drives, any particular reason why not?

Anyway, I am myself looking for one external drive that will always work.
I currently use an external Plextor PX-B310U, and an internal Plextor PX-B940SA drive.
Some discs rip only on the PX-B310U, some discs rip only on the PX-B940SA, switching between them is a pain.

Many of the drives in the DAE DB are no longer being manufactured, or readily available, or available in an external enclosure.

Would anybody care to recommend; a highly reliable, current model, readily available, external drive?

                  P.

Is the S222L similar, I am looking for a new drive, I'd prefer IDE. The 223 is SATA.

I ordered the 222L. I'll see how it performs with a new cd I'll be getting as well.

I really like the modern Samsung drives. My only gripe with them is lack of over-reading into read in/out, but I don't think you will find that anywhere but the old/real plextors.

That is the exact one I got and now it is sold out.
