    Transcoding 256/320-mp3s to 192 ???

    Hi,
I'm looking for a program that recode my 256/320er mp3s to 192er to fit my mp3s for CarHifi. But I'm looking for a prog that not decode 320er mp3 to wav and then decode wav to 192. I'm looking for a prog that directly downgrade 320er to 192er without qualitiy loss.

    Thanx

In mp3 the quality is lost when encoding, not decoding.

regardless of how you convert the 320 to 192, there WILL BE LOSS OF QUALITY. It is not possible to transcode from one lossy format to another without such loss (even if going from mp3 to mp3).

Any time you transcode from one lossy codec to another, there is going to be a loss of quality. This is unavoidable. This is even true when "up-converting" (if that is even the proper term) a 128 kbps MP3 to 320.

But I think the most important thing to consider is not whether there's a loss of quality (there is), but whether or not you'd be able to hear it.

Hi, I know that there will be a loss of quality if I transcode it from 320 to 192, because in an 320er mp3 there are more information saved as in an 192er. But there will be a very more loss of quality if i decode 320 to wav and then re-encode to 192, as if I go directly from 320 to 192... And thats the way I search for. Today theres a possibility to edit mp3 directly without decode to wav, there could be a way to directly transcode from 320 to 192.

            It makes no difference.

I don't think it is possible to transcode a 320 kbps MP3 directly to 192. It has to be converted to WAV first (and that WAV file will only be as good as the source MP3). That WAV is then encoded back to MP3. The thing is, most programs can do the two steps "on the fly."

And as I said before, there is a loss of quality even when going up from 192 to 320.
