Where did the metadata (tags) come from?

A lot of the time, when we insert a CD to rip using the FLAC encoder, some or a lot of the metadata fields are filed in right away with the appropriate or nearly-correct values. However, when going to the Review Metadata Matches window, the column headings for AMG, GD3, MusicBrainz and FreedB are dimmed (greyed out) and no matches are indicated.

There seems to be no way to understand where the tag information originated. Was it included in CD-Text, did it come from some other database or what? How can we tell? This is more than just a mystery to us that we'd like to solve. We'd really like to "understand" what we're doing as we rip thousands of albums, one-at-a-time, carefully ensuring that all of the tags are complete, consistent and correct.

Where can we learn more about the use of CD-Text, CD-UPC, and CD-ISRC as sources of metadata.

The question remains, however: "How can we determine the source of the metadata when it's not obvious where it came from?"

    Thanks in advance.

It means it came from dBpoweramp Cache, because the CD has been inserted before.

Can't always be the case. This occurs frequently with first-time insertions. That is, metadata appears for the CD but the four columns on the Review Perfect Metadata Matches (Manual Meta Review) page are greyed-out and have no data in their columns.

Other times, there are tags to review from one or more of those sources.

Is metadata ever actually found on the CD in the form of CD-Text or through other means recorded on the CD--other than by matching number of tracks, track lengths and track order, that is?

Only if you have cd-text checked.
