    Can C2 report false positives?

One of my disc drives supports C2 pointers. At least, that is what a test with a simulated damaged CD seemed to indicate. However, I cannot rip any track accurately on this drive with C2 pointers enabled; they require several frames to be re-ripped. Turning off C2, every track rips accurately in the first pass.

I am wondering what's happening here. Is C2 causing the ripper to report false positives? Just as a second test, I placed a brand new CD and tested for C2 support. Almost immediately, it said that C2 errors were found.
