To DSP or not to DSP... that is the question

I have a mixture of around 70 stereo interleaved and mono 24 bit 48KHz wav files. If I want to resample to 44.1KHz/16 bit, is it better to specify the bit rate and sample size in the Music Convertor dropdown menus, or leave them set 'as source' and use the Bit Depth and Resample DSP effects?

Regardless of the answer to that question, is it safe to change the bit rate and sample size at the same time, or is it better to do them separately? If separately, should I do the sample size first - 48KHz/24 to 44.1KHz/24 to 44.1KHz/16 or bit rate first - 48KHz/24 to 48KHz/16 to 44.1KHz/16?

Should be both the same, although the latest DSP effects (in beta) can dither to 16 bit.
