I wanted to try this on my WHS.
Does dBpoweramp have to be installed on the same machine? Or can Asset uPNP be installed stand-alone?
Stand alone, I will create a WHS install next week which preconfigures as a service and shares the right folders.

Hello,
I would second dvdr's approach in organising music in a more "musical" manner.
My feeling is that most of the music related software was written by and for pop music people, and even the uPNP spec shows that the authors did not necessarily think of classical music or jazz.
Ideally I would like to be able to browse similar to:
Mode/Popular
Mode/Jazz
Mode/Opera
Mode/ :
Mode/Classical
Mode/Classical/Epoch
Mode/Classical/Type
Mode/Classical/Composer
Mode/Classical/Performer
Mode is not necessarily Genre, but the way music is browsed. For popular music the approach artist/album/song is sufficient, for Jazz composers and arrangers are as interesting to know as performers.
In classical music, Epoch would be:
Epoch/Baroque
Epoch/ :
Epoch/Wiener Klassik/
Epoch/Wiener Klassik/Mozart
Epoch/Wiener Klassik/Haydn
In Type I would like to see:
Type/String Quartett
Type/Piano Sonata/
Type/:
Obviously, the same subtree could appear for busy composers if they apply, i.e. if a set of works can be combined into a logical group:
Mode/Classical/Composer/Beethoven
Mode/Classical/Composer/Beethoven/String Quartett
Mode/Classical/Composer/Beethoven/Piano Sonata
Going beyond that, if I have several recordings of one sonata:
../Beethoven/Piano Sonata/No32 Opus 111/
../Beethoven/Piano Sonata/No32 Opus 111/Alfred Brendel
../Beethoven/Piano Sonata/No32 Opus 111/Emil Giles
So ideally, a uPNP server should allow:
1. tag music beyond id3 tags though some maintenance interface
2. allow more sophisticated content browse and search.
Last but not least, the server should run on Linux as this less resource hungry OS is most likely used in embedded devices.
Cheers.
I'm pretty excited by this -- most of the uPNP servers out there are iffy at best.
I tried getting Asset to work with both my PS3 and XBox 360, with Asset running on my Windows Server 2008 box.
I was able to get the library up and running -- it scanned through my music folders (and pretty quickly, too, with 15K tracks), but when I try to connect with my XBox it tells me the server disconnected, and the PS3 tells me there's a DLNA protocol error.
Is it supposed to work with these playback clients yet? Is it supposed to work with Windows Server 2008? I'm happy to work with you to debug if/when that makes sense.

XBox is no go ATM.
The PS3 - where does it show that error, whilst browsing the artist trees? or before anything shows?

Hi Spoon.
I try it with my Netbook at the T+A MP1250R Media Player. It dosen't works. The T+A dont't display this uPNP programm.
My T+A works with Windows MediaPlayer 11 (no Flac support) and Twonky (only demo).

Spoon
again, an extremely valuable update, thanks!
Especially switching to "streaming instead of temp-converting to wav" is a great update, and the editable music-tree already now matches more of my needs than any other upnp-server has ever been able to give me until now!!!!! Thanks!
Would you mind giving a hint about AssetUPnPDefinedAudioTypes.txt ?
There's a list of file-types - would we need to edit that file somehow to match requirements of certain clients?
I was wondering, whether this was possible, and tried to find that out by myself (with no luck, yet):
Right now, I need to set "force to wav" to play for example an m4b-file - would that be editable somehow in that configuration file, so that if asset-upnp encounters a non-compliant file it would set itself to "stream to wav"?
I tried to reach that by adding an entry
(That would be the official mime-type for m4b)Code:.m4b http-get:*:audio/m4b:DLNA.ORG_OP=01 audio/m4b
but it would not work without "force to wav" enabled.
Thanks again for developing this and your great support!

This looks very interesting to me.
I have tried to use it with my Denon AVR-3808CI, but after starting the Asset-UPNP server, the Denon shows a new entry for it:
Asset UPnP [computername] (Not Authorized)
So I cannot connect. Is that normal at this beta stage or am I missing something? Would we at some future point expect this to work?
Have always appreciated your tools, am also looking forward to this one!
Another significant update:
Updated to 0.7 beta. Compatibility with Songbook and PlugPlayer (iPod Touch/iPhone) UPnP controllers has been completed.
Added album art
Added extra fields for renderer can display album, artist, etc
Tested compatibility with SongBook & Plug Player
fix: if no database asset shows tree items
Download as first message.
Upgrading from previous beta
Uninstall Asset UPnP, reboot computer, browse to:
%appdata%\dBpoweramp\uMediaLibrary\
and delete all files. Then install new beta.
It is hoped that a v1.0 release will be completed very early in the New Year. DLNA certification is also being investigated.
