Tag from filename - Can't get it working properly

    Hello all

Before asking my questions I think I'd better explain my folder and naming system.

I have all my audio files stored on partition E:
which is divided into two main folders <Music> and <Narrative>.

<Music> is divided into 12 subfolders corresponding to <Genre>,
e.g. Classical, Rock, Blues, Pop, etc.

These are divided into <Artist> subfolders and
these are divided into <Year> space <Album> subfolders.

Then come the files named <Track number> (two digits) space <Track title>.

    Now the questions :

I have been trying to modify the tags to correspond to folder location and filename.
    In <File Selector> I check a <Genre> folder.
    <Convert>
    I have the <Tag recognition> set to
    E:\Music\[genre]\[artist]\[year] [album]\[track number] [track].

The tags of APE, MPC, and OGG files remain unchanged.
    APE and MPC files
    Type
    Date modified
    Size
    OGG files
    Type
    Size

The tags of MP3 files appear to have changed :
    Artist
    Album title
    Year
    Duration
    Type
    Bit rate
    Protected
    Size
    but are missing <Genre> and <Track title>.

    Question 1
    How can I get conversion to include <Genre> and <Track title> ?

    Question 2
Can I tamper with tags so that e.g. <Protected> is not shown ?

    Question 3
How can I convert the tags from other file types (APE, MPC, OGG) to the same format with the same information ?

Best regards and thanks in advance
    from Ray

You should not add the drive or folder to the taggin recognition.

      Hello Spoon et al

      Thanks for the quick reply.

      There's still something odd happening
that I shall probably only cure by means of script
and there I'm out of my depth.

I have used <Convert> <Update ID tags> to ensure that all tags are as set in <DMC configuration> <ID tag options> (where I have set Monkey's audio to APE2).

      In <Convert> <Tag from filename> <Tag recognition>
I have removed the drive letter etc.
      It is now
      [genre]\[artist]\[year] [album]\[track number] [track]

(I assume this function doesn't work forward in absolute terms from the drive letter - but backward from the file itself. Is that right ?)

      Now the curious bit.

If at Album level the folder name is only one word
(i.e. without the year - because I don't know it),
conversion puts genre in the place of artist, i.e.
everything is shifted back one level.
I imagine this is because the converter can't find the missing year.
However, if I add just one letter as a separate word to the album folder name, it works fine again.

Is there an idiot's guide to using script somewhere ?

      Best regards from Ray

It does work backwards and it does require the filename to have all the elements specified.

          Thanks for the reply.

I do realize that consistency is everything
          in arranging audio tracks;
otherwise automatic tagging won't work properly.

I have, however, where there is no album, e.g. odd tracks and singles, etc. placed such tracks in the folder otherwise reserved for <year> <album>
directly under the <artist>, i.e. missing out one folder level.

Is there a way to deal with these tracks ?
At the moment I have to edit these tags manually.

          Best regards from Ray

Only if you can manually seperate them.
