Exclamation [HELP] Can't read/decode .rm files.

    Hi all,

this problem always shows up when i attempt to convert my .rm files.

"The CODEC required to decompress 'C:\01.rm' could not be opened.
DirectShow filter for '.rm' not installed, or Audio File Corrupt."

I believe i did everything correctly, media player classic is able to play my .rm files. And i didn't install RealAlternative, as doing so will require me to uninstall real player, which i am not tempted to do.

Previously, i was able to convert .rm files without fail. only recently did this happen and i have no idea why this occur.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Can you play the .rm files in Windows Media Player?

Re: [HELP] Can't read/decode .rm files.

What version of dBpowerAMP Music Converter are you using now?
What version were you using back when you were able to read/convert .rm files?
With version 11.5 and earlier, there was an older RealAudio decoder that converted only in real time but which did not require Real Alternative. There is no such corresponding Real Audio decoder for version 12/12.1.

I could be wrong but my understanding was that the Real Audio DirectShow decoder required Real Alternative in order to work. If I am wrong on this point, I am am sure that someone will correct me on this.

    Best wishes,
    Bill

    You are correct Xoas.

    With r11.5 you could have:

Real Alternative (or at least its filter portion) + DirectShow codec

    OR

Real Player (or Real One) + old Real Media codec

    BUT NOT BOTH.

    Quite a problem.

hmmm.......if i remember correctly i should have installed 11.5. However, i noticed that recently, the layout of the dBpoweramp Configuration window is different from the past. I don't believe i upgraded it to 12, but is it possible that dBpoweramp automatically upgraded by itself?

If so, will having it at 11.5 again work to convert my .rm files?

And Window Media Player couldn't play .rm files but Media player classic could.

Re: [HELP] Can't read/decode .rm files.

You can confirm your version of dMC by checking dMC configuration. So first check your dMC Configuration to see what version of dMC you have. If it shows r11.5 or earlier, look at the list of installed decoders to see if there is an entry for a Real Audio decoder. If this does not show up, install the old Real Audio input decoder from Legacy Codec Central. If it does show up, check to see if you have the DirectShow decoder installed and if it is configured to read .rm files. You may want to remove this file association from your DirectShow filter configuration to avoid any conflict (or you can remove the DirectShow filter altogether).

You can have both dMC r11.5 (or earlier) and dMC 12/12.1 on the same computer but they need to be installed separately.
Be aware that the Codecs now available at Codec Central will ONLY work for dMC r12/12.1 and that codecs for dMC r11.5 and earlier can be found at Legacy Codec Central (you will find a link to Legacy Codec Central at Codec Central). The Legacy codecs cannot be used with dMC r12/12.1.

    Hope this helps.
    Best wishes,
    Bill

Re: [HELP] Can't read/decode .rm files.

My converter is 11.5 version checked.

there was 2 methods given :

    1) Real Alternative (or at least its filter portion) + DirectShow codec

    OR

    2) Real Player (or Real One) + old Real Media codec

I tried 2, but it is too slow, it takes as long as the file to be played right?

But in order to use method 1, do i need to uninstall my realplayer? i am really not tempted to do so. But i remember last time, i was able to convert rm files even when i have realplayer installed.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I believe RealPlayer is supposed to be uninstalled if you install RealAlternative. You can try the RA method without uninstalling Real, but it is not recommended or it may not even work at all.

Re: [HELP] Can't read/decode .rm files.

But the point is that how was i able to convert .rm files last time using method one when i still have my real player installed.

Method 2, which works, takes too much time to convert .rm file.

So is it possible not to uninstall real player in order to use method 1?

As I said above, you can try it, but I don't know if it will work or not.

Re: [HELP] Can't read/decode .rm files.

I uninstalled realplayer already, and tried to convert. But it didn't work. Media Player Classic can play the RM files, but not windows media player.

I installed directshow filter already, and configure it to .rm, and Real alternative is install.
Currently i am using version 11.5.

And i am still getting the same message
"The CODEC required to decompress 'C:\01.rm' could not be opened.
DirectShow filter for '.rm' not installed, or Audio File Corrupt."

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you sure that you installed the splitter component that came with Real alternative as this allows WMP and dMC to read Real Audio files via Directshow?

How big is the .rm file you are trying to play? Is it a real audio file or just meta data pointing to a location elsewhere?

Re: [HELP] Can't read/decode .rm files.

Additionally, if the splitter is installed correctly and some .rm files play in WMP but others don't, the ones that don't play in WMP will not be able to be converted by dMC, as both programs use the splitter to decode the files.
