Is that tag really just for Apple or is it generally recognised?

Another Tagging for Dummies Qu .... Multi-work Albums

Some CD Albums have two or more works on them, eg, Beethoven's 6th & 8th Symphonies.

Im wondering what is the best practice here ... treat as a single album, or split into two 'logical' albums.

If one keeps it as a single Album, the each movement (track) has to have the name of the work in it. Eg Symphony No 6: I. Allegro ma non troppo whereas if we use two 'albums' then the track title can drop the 'Symphony No 6:' which makes it shorter. (Long track names aren't always handled well by all players). Music Brainz seems to use the single album approach.
Am I right there really isnt a level of hierarchy between 'album' and 'track'?
