why can't i encode to mp3?

i keep getting the following error when i try to convert to mp3:

The CODEC required to compress 'C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\song.mp3' could not be opened.
Error creating mp3 compressor, try different frequencies and / or bitrates

i can convert mp3s to .wav files but i cannot convert them back or convert anything else to mp3s.

the last wave file i tried to convert was PCM, frequency 22050, 1 channel, 16 bit if that helps.

i just registered yesterday and downloaded the registered version of the program.

please help. thanks.

Try the latest beta version (R11.1 from beta section this forum) it should fix this (report here if it works for you please).

i installed the latest beta version with the default settings. same problem. what should i try now? i'm a little frustrated that i paid for it and i can't get it to work...

yes, the registered version was installed first, then i installed the beta.

Try converting your wav file to a 16-bit, 44100Hz WAV file and then converting to mp3.

I've had this same error a number of times over the years. I was looking at it tonight, It happens when i try to convert a very long .ape file which is about 45 or 50 mins long, for some reason it converts with 160kps set but anything more than that it comes up with an error.

How big is your source ape file and how large is the 160kbps mp3 file? I think the problem is that when it uncompresses the ape file, it hits the 4GB file limit dMC has.

50 minutes of audio would not hit 4GB. For 16-bit 44.1KHz 2-channel stereo wav this would be about 500MB.

But if there's insufficient ram or temporary disk space it's possible to run into problems. Consider also any DSP effects that may be used.

I have the same problem converting to mp3, same error message and everything. Wouldn't be insufficient RAM or disk space, as I've gone out of my way to ensure a surplus of both. When I converted the wav to 16 bits first, it allowed me to convert to mp3, but I still want to know why it won't convert 24-bit wavs. I would hope that the program didn't contain an arbitrary ceiling on sound quality.

Its a limitation of the mp3 decoder. Check the beta linked below in my signature for an update that should fix this problem.

The mp3 format is no more than 16-bit. Any conversion of 24-bit or higher waves will have by necessity to go through an intermediate conversion to a 16-bit wave followed by a conversion to mp3. The new beta release of dMC does this in one step for you.
