CODEC could not be opened

I am trying to convert a shorten file to WMA format. Every time I try I get this:

The CODEC required to compress 'C:\jj2004-08-31.at831.shnf_shn\jj2004-08-31d1t01.wma' could not be opened.

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the WMA codec several times. I have also tried both the 9.1 and 9 codec available on this site. I have also tried converting a Wave file to WMA and get the same effect. I can convert a Shorten file to a wav file though.

Any ideas about this? it has me stumped!

regular WMA format or WMA professional or WMA voice?

If conversion of .wav to .wma has the same effect, then I would say your wma codec is not properly installed.

Please note that the wma codec installation is in 2-3 steps and it depends on your OS and version of WMP what exactly you have to do.

after you install it correctly, (if you haven't before) tell us if you still have the problem. If you do, look at the second post on this thread and answer the question and I may be able to help.

Thanks for the help! I am just doing the regular WMA 9.1 format (not voice or professional). I have tried the WMA 9 format as well. I also followed the installation instructions for each to the letter.

What are the settings of the source file (frequency, bits, channels)?
