rename you .asx to .wma then download dmc from here:
download center (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/download.htm)
then go to codec central and download the windows media codec from codec central here:
codec central (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-wma.htm)

Just be careful, .asx refers to a meta-file for pseudo-streaming Windows Media Files (wma or wvm). There may be more than media file in the .asx stream, so you should target them seperately. You can edit the .asx file using Notepad and you can see the names of actual media files.

How do you rename the asx file to wma
Use Windows Explorer, find your particular file that has the extension asx and right-click on it. Select the option Rename and enter a new name with the mp3 extension instead of asx. But be careful because you are really doing this just to fool a program. Your file is not an mp3 file just because of that trick.
A file with the asx extension is normally a meta-file, a kind of playlist file used for streaming, and the particular audio/video file(s) that are part of this playlist appear in it, in the order they will be streamed by Windows Media Player.
If you open your asx file using Notepad you will see that the contents are very readable, unlike a true mp3 file or wma file, which is only binary data.
You will see something like:
<ASX VERSION="3.0">
<Title>xyz</Title>
<ENTRY>
<REF HREF="http://www.some_site.com/xyz.wma" />
</ENTRY>
..
..
</ASX>
The line <REF HREF .... > actually gives the name and path to the true audio/video file which could have extension wma, wmv, mp3, mid and probably several others that I can't think of right now. There may also be many other descriptive tags there like <copyright> or <author> or
, all of which appear when Windows Media Player plays the file.
If you're doing the renaming trick, make sure you rename it back to an asx extension once you're done with the conversion, or you'll never straighten it out again.

What exactly plays that file? and what extension does it really have?
You must tell Windows to show you the extensions of known file types since it obvioulsy must have an extension and you're just not seeing it. That option is in Tools>Folder Options>View> and uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Then you go back and look at the real name of your file.
If in doubt, try to open it with Notepad - if you can read the contents and it makes sense, then it is a meta-file, and what's in it should tell you what and where the real file is.
If you can't read it and you have a player that plays it, it is an audio file. The extension will tell you what kind.
Until you figure out these details it's hard to pinpoint what you need for conversion.

Ok, rename your original file back to something.asx.
Assuming there's no virus involved, what you want to convert is really the xyz.asf that's referenced inside your asx file. You have to get that file onto your pc.
The <REF HREF=.....> will give you the path to access the audio file directly.
If it's got http in front, it's possible to download. For others, it depends.
Copy that complete file path into your IE address bar (right after the first " and stop before the second "). If it is a proper audio file, it will start playing in Windows Media Player. Use File>Save media as and save your file to your pc, with the extension .wma.
Try converting it using dMC now. If it still doesn't work, it may be copy protected and you cannot convert it unless you use Auxiliary Input.

Let us assume that Windows Media Player doesn't lie. You must have somehow copied the url of the file wrong, or indeed that file no longer exists at that location, or the site is down.
Oh, I assume at the time you're trying this that you are in fact connected to the internet.
So maybe you can post here the contents of the original asx file. Open it in Notepad, do CTRL+A and then paste it in here and we'll take a look.

Ok, that's a playlist from a streaming server. You can't copy anything from here. What you can do is copy this url to your addres bar in the browser or just click on it here.

This will play it in WIndows Media Player. Stop it, but don't close the player.
Open dMC Auxiliary Input, select your options (I recommend saving to wav first), and start recording and then play the song in WIndows Media. At the end you stop the recording and you have a saved audio file.
If you saved the audio file to wav, you can then use dMC to convert it to anything you want.
BTW, I did this conversion already myself, so it works :)

Please just read the documentation at the top of this forum for Music Converter and Codec Central. It gives you everything you need to know about dMC and Auxiliary Input. As the saying goes: "Just do it!"
The link I gave you in my previous post to the asf file that you want to convert, works in my version of Windows Media Player (v 9). All you need to do is click on it or right click and Copy shortcut and then paste it into your browser's address bar. If you're using an older version of WIndows Media Player, it may not work, then you should upgrade it from Microsoft.
Also in Windows Media Player use Options>File Types> and Select All in order to make WMP you default player for most types of audio files. Other players like Real Player or Winamp tend to hijack this spot, you have to be aware of this, as a possible fix when something doesn't quite work.

Like I said: start WIndows Media Player all by itself and go and fix the file types in Tools>Options>File Types where you use Select all and then OK.
Then come back to this forum thread and simply click on the link I gave here, don't bother to copy and paste into the browser because you might be dropping characters at the begining or at the end. Just click on the link I gave you here higher up in the thread. This should open WIndows Media Player and play it for you.
BTW, by doing this you are not using the file you have downloaded at all, so don't bother with that. The link takes you directly to the location where the actual audio file is stored and streamed from.

You can't use the Save Media as, that would be for regular audio files, not server streamed ones. You have to use dMC Auxiliary input.
Start that, select your options there then start playing the file (click on the link I gave here before), stop the player (don't close it, just stop it from playing). Back to Auxiliary input start recording - back to WMP - start playing.
Let it play until the end. Stop recording. It's done - after a few sconds it will finish saving the file. The file is saved in the folder where you told it to, under some weird name (like maybe -Track01.wav, depending what you chose) with the extension wav.
Rename it to a meaningful name with the extension av again, and then use dMC (the converter) and convert to whatever file type you want.

by the way the reason it stops recording in 3-6 seconds is cause the vu meter is originaly set to 10 to to start
and below 10 to end and most songs start below 10 and rise above 10 then go back down below 10 and thats where it stops but you gotta set ir to start above 5 and end below 1

LOL! This is why you have those controls, to fix it any way you wish. Usually what you have at the start and at the end of an audio clip is silence anyway, so it doesn't much matter, unless you know you have something that you don't want to miss. Since this an audio capture rather than a conversion, it is done in real time and the duration depends on how long you let it run for.

and don't forget the beta ver4 aux input here: bet4 (http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=2424)
with smart length if you know the lenght before hand then this is the accurate way :)
quote from the help file:
For those who are lucky enough to have the Power Pack help is at hand to improve recordings when using Auto Start / End options:
Smart Track Length is a Power Pack option which will enable Auto End to more accurately function. Each track length can be set and dMC will only look for the end track quiet spell after that time has elapsed (minus 5 seconds), why do this? well if you had set the dMC to Auto End after 3 seconds of silence and you happened to have a music piece which had 3 seconds worth of silence in the middle of the track then it will end incorrectly! To type a Smart Track Length, select the first track (was called Track 1) and type the length:
To jump straight to Track 2 simply press Enter after typing your Seconds and it will jump down. Smart Track Length can also be used with the Auto End option switched off and the resulting recording will be exactly the Smart Track Length specified. Tip: If using Smart Track Length and Auto End the auto end detection period can be reduced from 3 seconds to more accurately pickup a track ending.
Another enhancement Power Pack offers is correct adding and removal of Auto Start / End sound data. Let me elaborate - taking Auto Start first, if the recording was set to begin after 750 ms (3/4 second) worth of sound then the Power Pack is smart enough to remember this 750 ms of sound data so it appears at the beginning of the file being recorded. The opposite is also true for Auto End, if 3000 ms (3 seconds) of quiet is required to end a recording then

Hi!
The recording solution is quite good, I think, but when I do it, it doesn't give any sound. When I listen to what I've recorded (from Windows Media Player 9), I don't hear anything.
Does anyone know what the problem is? Thank you very much!

Can you listen to any other audio file through WMP? If not, then you may have to check the Master Volume Controls by right-clicking on the volume icon in the task bar. Make sure nothing is muted and the Volume sliders are up, especially for the Master Volume itself for Playback (check options). See if there's a separate place to check for headphones or speakers.
For Recording check that Stereo Mix (or some such term) is selected in the Volume control.
BTW, the Volume Master Control panel and all the terms may differ depending on your particular soundcard, but in general this is where you have to look.

no not strange at all :)
basically re read what christinaS said above.
so when you have your audio properties control panel open so you can see what is selected and not. try different combinations whilst you have the record test going so you will know when you have selected the right properties.
i might post some screen shots for better example.

Also strange, I can't scroll the bar from the volume of recording. That's locked, like it seems. In my sound setup there's one thing that says recordvolume, but I can't change that. Although the volume is somewhere in the middle (so it's not with no sound), could that be the problem?

Sorry, the contents of this file appear to be in a non-western code - or perhaps it is an audio file itself, though the name suggests a meta-file. I don't know what you can do with it. Does it play in any player at all? if it does, then use dMC Auxiliary Input and capture the audio to wav and then convert it (or capture directly to a compressed format).

I'm looking for a way to prevent "the average surfer" from stealing my videos on a regular server.
I've recently read about putting videos in asx files but I don't understand it yet.
I know that there are programs out there that can copy streamed videos but I'm talking about the average surfer.
Can someone help me on this matter?

Read my post in FAQ http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=4992 where I deal with meta-files.
While the implementation of ASX presented there refers more to audio files, you can use the exact same model to handle video files.
This combined with extra information from http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wcewmt/html/_wcesdk_asx_asx_elements_reference.asp should help you.
Note that an .asx meta file can be used for .wmv, .mpg and .avi files, as well as for .asf, .wma and .mp3 audio files. Quite possibly a few more file types too.
Of course, anybody who's got a bit of knowledge in such matters will be able to strip the file from the .asx file quite easily, by the methods we've posted here in this forum.
I do have some idea of how to protect that though. I haven't tried any yet but I'd like to take a crack at it. I will post something to this effect as soon as I confirm my hunches.

Okay, now it's my turn. :( I've read all five pages of posts in this thread, and I am having a similar problem in that after I record and try to replay the track, I get nothing but static. Previously, I got nothing, even though all the recording control levels were maxed. Now, all of the sudden, I am getting sound, but its just static.
Here is the URL. I was just trying to save it as a wav file:

Okay, now it's my turn. :( I've read all five pages of posts in this thread, and I am having a similar problem in that after I record and try to replay the track, I get nothing but static. Previously, I got nothing, even though all the recording control levels were maxed. Now, all of the sudden, I am getting sound, but its just static.
Here is the URL. I was just trying to save it as a wav file:
http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/wm2/muze.download.akamai.com/2890/us/uswm2/328/19328_1_01.asx?
Any suggestions, o wise ones? :smile2:
Yes: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=4992
and: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=5362
By using the notions in the first FAQ thread, I downloaded the asx file - which is a meta file for streaming through Windows Media player.
Here is the content of the asx file, after I opened it with Notepad:
<ASX VERSION="3.0">
<ENTRY>
<REF HREF="mms://a827.v31715.c3171.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/827/3171/v0001/muze.download.akamai.com/2890/us/uswm2/328/19328_1_01.wm2" />
</ENTRY>
</ASX>
The file you need to download is the one contained in the <REF HREF=....> tag.
You cannot download it as it is from a streaming server (as indicated by the protocol mms:// ). So you apply the notions in the second FAQ thread I give you.
Bottom line: Use WMP to play your asx file and capture the wav through dMC Auxiliary input. Then convert to whatever you want. Or capture directly to mp3 or wma ....
Oh, and don't forget to adjust the Volume control settings for recording (from the volume icon in your task bar): input source is Stereo Mix or something similar (it depends on your sound card and the program that controls it). Make sure other input sources are muted or inactive, such as microphone and cd player.

Thanks alot,
This thread was very helpful, i just starting using dmc auxiliary input and I love it.
One thing to newbies that might be tripping them up, the no sound problem, is to enable sterio mix in the recording volume properties window, and select that. It took me a minute to figure how to turn that on.

"If you see something less common like mms:// in front of a file name, then you are dealing with a streaming server and most likely you cannot save the media file directly to disk. In that case you will have to use dMC Auxiliary Input to play the meta file and capture the audio (best to capture to .wav), before you convert to anything."
Hi!
I was reading your notes just then and I tried to record a downloaded asx file with dmc auxiliary input with the asx file playing by wmp. I pressed Record button but it doesn't record properly... What should I do?
And one more what should I do to get the streaming movie from the internet?
Thanks!

.asx refers tot he meta file - it is no the actual audio file.
So read this http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=4992 and get your actual audio file from there.
Note: A file has to be downloaded onto your pc in order to use dMC to convert it. If you cannot download it, then use dMC Auxiliary input and record an audio file from the player that plays it off the web.

I've got two computers and one has the asx files(streaming audio) and I can play it anytime and the other computer has the dmc auxiliary input and those computers are connected with the line. Whenever I play the asx file and record with the other computer, and played it, it always makes this buzz sound and it is not properly recorded. What is the good settings for recording stream audios?

What do you mean "those computers are connected with the line" ? Are they on a network of sorts?
I'll assume that you are using Windows Explorer on the computer where you want to record and playing your file from the remote computer.
The buzz sound must be from the settings on your Volume control panel on the computer where you are trying to use dMC Auxliary Input to record.
Open that (from the volume icon in your task bar) and check the recording control settings. The input should be from Stereo mix (or wav maybe) or something like that, not CD or microphone. Only one input option should be used, all others should not. The names of the input options all depend on the particular sound card you are using and the control program associated with it.

There's something on Strembox CR and a download. Perhaps this will help you.

No. If you don't want to use any other stuff outside the dBpowerAMP family, then you must use dMC Auxiliary Input to record the audio that you hear from the player that plays the file, to a wav or directly to a compressed type. That will be done one by one in real time.

You cannot download a file wose protocol is mms:// because that's from a multi media streaming sever. If that were http:// it would work.
Use dMC AUxiliary Input for that.

hey how do u change .wma to .asx?
Why do you want to change .wma to .asx?
.asx is a meta-file - it simply points to the wma file which is the true audio file. The purpose is pseudo-streaming of the .wma file - on the web.
If you want to create an .asx file, take a look at http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=4992 .

Virus properties??? Where does that come from???
The <REF HREF=.....> will give you the path to access the audio file directly.
If it's got http in front, it's possible to download. For others, it depends.
What if I cant download the file?

i did everything i was sposed to... but i can't convert .asx files and even when i rename it to .wma, it still says its unable to convert. i even tried open all the .asx files in notepad so i can get the true file and linked it to a site i made so i can "save target as" but it says i can't because it's protected or something. is there anything else i can do?
ChristinaS

Look up 2 posts and do as Razgo says: record the audio as it is being played through your soundcard by using dMC Auxiliary Input, which you can download from here as well. Follow the instructions at http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthread.php?t=5362 .
You could however post the link to whatever it is you were traying to capture/convert and let's see what's what.

at first, i renamed all my .asx files to .wma, then used the music converter but that didn't seem to work.
then i tried opening the .asx files with notepad and to get the real file and even tried linking it on a site so i can "save target as" but it says i can't. does that mean its copy protected?
so i've been using the auxiliary input and its working but it sounds really crappy even if i changed the options to what should work best.
what can i do to improve the quality?
or am i doing anything wrong?
or is there any OTHER way to convert .asx to .mp3?

Can you be more particular about what sounds "crappy" about your track(s) created with Auxilary Input? Can you tell us about the settings you are using for your soundcard and for Auxilary Input?
You might want to check out ChristinaS' FAQ thread on Auxilary Input here:

Again I will say it: .asx is not a an audio file format. It is a meta file which gives the address of the actual audio file. That audio file itself may or may not be protected. CVhances are that if you cannot get it downloaded it is actually on a streaming server. You can then only stream it frlom tehre, so you have to capture it. dmC will capture it if you play it through a player.
You may not have properly followed the isntruciton os selecting your input source in Volume Controls. Right-click on the Volume icon in the atsk bar (the bullhorn), then Open Volume Controls > Options > Properties > Recording . At this point you have a list of all types of volume controls to show. Check all f them and click OK. A screen will shown with all the different sources of inoput for recording. Make sure everything is unchecked (especially microphone) except for Stereo Mix (sometimes called What U Hear). The volume sldier on Stereo Mix should be about 2/3 of the way up. Close this window. You can go back to dMC Auxiliary Input and srat recording.
The audio quality will depend on waht your'e recording to. For best results it should be 16-bit, stereo wav at 44.1KHz. After that you can convert it to whatever other format you like.

You have to update your list of inputs to include all the available sources.
Look in Volume control (bullhorn in task bar), properties > recordign> and check all available optins. After you click ok, you'll be shown an expanded screen with all those controls and you will find either Stereo Mix or What U hear or somethign similar there. Make sure only that is selected for an input source.

This is definately not working for me, i open up WMA, stop the song, turn on dmc aux input, record, play the song, end record when its done, and convert it to an mp3, the thing is, i dont hear anything at all, i dont think it recorded the song when i played it and i dont know how to fix this

Well, it looks like you never did select the input source in Volume Control (the bullhorn in your task bar) prior to attempting to record. Right click on that > Open Volume Controls > Options > Properties> Recording. Now make sure all the different types volume controls appearing in the window are checked. Click OK and then verify on the new screen that's shown containing all the options for recording input sources that nothing is selected except for Stereo Mix (or What U Hear, depending on sound card). (NB: You can also get to this exact same screen directly from dMC Auxiliary Input > Options > Input Source Select).
Then go back and redo your recording using dMC Auxiliary Input.

Auxiliary input simply means additional input, from another source. This program allows you to record audio while it plays through your sound card.
You have to read all the instructions on how to use dMC Auxiliary Input and follow them all. Pay particular attention to preparing the Volume Controls for recording - you have to specify the input source correctly. For streaming (presumably off the net), you will use Stereo Mix (or What U Hear, depending on your sound card).

Do you mean that the file you're playing is streamed on the internet and you cannot actually download it and save it? I am afraid then that the recording will be as bad as how it plays off the net.
You can improve this in Windows Media Player >Tools > Performance and set Buffering to a high amount like 300 seconds to allow for the entire piece to be fully downloaded before it starts playing. It may work, but you'll have to be ready to start recording a couple of seconds before it's finished downloading, kind of hit and miss thing.
There may be other ways, always depending on what type of file it is.

I dont think it is as difficult as that.
I just load mu Cubase program, make a new audio track, connect the program to
the audio output channel of my PC and then.... record.
After this i can save the file in any format i want i.e. mp3, wave, etc...
