View Full Version : WAV to (ALAC +metadata). Getting confused...

Obviously a bit of a newbie here but I have been doing some research here and elsewhere. I found a couple of threads here that petered out just as they got interesting (darn it). I digress.

Situation: Thousands of tracks ripped from CD's into WAV on my WinTel box. Being WAV there is no embedded metadata and thus such info is inferred by my Windows database (Media Monkey) from the pathname and filename. <artist>/<album>/<track num><track name>.
Basic stuff.
So now I need to get all this into iTunes on a shiny new OS X Mac.
The problem is two-fold.
(1) Converting WAV to ALAC (or .M4A more precisely, correct me if I'm wrong) which is relatively easy. The tricky bit is...
(2) During conversion, to populate the output file with inferred metadata based on pathname info and/or retrieve extra metadata (album art for instance) from the web if possible. Media Monkey just doesn't btw.

dbPoweramp has cropped up during my research many times, so here I am wondering if dbPoweramp will be the answer I'm looking for. Is it, do you think?
I also noted the talk about dbPoweramp being ported to OS X... which is very interesting.

Thank you.

Yes after conversion, visit codec central above and install the utility codec [Tag From Filename]

Thank you Spoon, this all sounds very promising :)
Hopefully not too dumb a question, but does the conversion process leave the new M4As in the same folder the WAVs were found in? Might compromise the tagging from filename (batch process?) otherwise.
Having tagged from filename, can I then try and tag from a web db? Can anyone recommend anything here please?
One last thing... my WinTel box has 32-bit Vista on a 64-bit CPU. Will I need to install it as 32-bit as per ?
When I get the hang of it I'd like to test drive the OS X version.

When converting you are best putting the new files in a different location, set dynamic naming to:

[origpath]\[origfilename]

Then set a new Folder where everything is placed (maintaining the original filenames and path also).

OK. I am seriously impressed with dBpa. My only regret is it took me so long to cross your path. Faint praise perhaps from a newbie to this game, but imho the UI is intuitive and somebody has really thought through the functionality. Money well spent :)
Looking forward to the OS X version.
