Hi,
I wanted to share with you guys a peculiar result I had with AccurateRip. First, let me tell you that I love AccurateRip and my ripping would be more miserable without it...
A few words about the CD. I ordered it a few days ago at Amazon US (Valentine present for my wife). It's brand new, pristine. It did not even went into our stereo yet.
So, let's rip it... I'll give you the raw data and will try to refrain from making too many comments. I'll split the 'story' into multiple posts to avoid hitting limits...

Ok, this one also get a confidence of 4.
One last thing : I have not yet submitted any AccurateRip result (unless EAC did that behind my back) and you have all the rips I did of that CD. In other words, the results in the database are not mine.
I'm waiting for your comments...

I forgot to add that I also did a 'test' (technically not a rip) with the PX-230A. This is the result.

I would say that:
The 230A is 100% correct, the other 2 drives which give an accurate result (4) are perhaps not correct (I have seen mentioned CDs with manufacturing defects, it could be if that disc, or others from the same batch are ripped on certain drive chipsets then the result is as you have seen, others have had problems also with the same cd).

Spoon - now that's an unexpected result - one would think an Accurate (4) rating would assure you that the rip is good.
Perhaps this is one of those rare last tracks where the audio data continues up to the end of track boundary, and some drives are better than others at assuring that they are sample accurate right at that border (perhaps related to the offset and lead-out reading capabilities?)?

AccurateRip is not effected by drive offsets and overreading.
When there have been about 20 million tracks ripped with AccurateRip you will come across strange happenings, this is one of them. All we can be sure is that 2 different drives give 2 different results, and different people with different discs have had both results.
It would be worth (if you want to investigate it) try dBpoweramp R12 to rip and enable c2 error pointers on the Lite-on and Plextor (as they both support) this gives an extra layer of confidence, it would be interesting to see if the results match the ones above.

I personally believe this is the case, but you must admit that your hypothesis is only based on circumstantial evidence (i.e. your own experience of the PX-230A) and nothing from the data itself can lead to this conclusion.
(I have seen mentioned CDs with manufacturing defects, it could be if that disc, or others from the same batch are ripped on certain drive chipsets then the result is as you have seen, others have had problems also with the same cd).
Yep, I believe there is a pressing defect. Note that, if there is a pressing defect, in theory none of the rip is perfect (you can't be assured to reconstruct the data before pressing), or you could say all rip are equally valid interpretation of the bogus data.
Spoon - now that's an unexpected result - one would think an Accurate (4) rating would assure you that the rip is good.
Yep. Interesting, isn't it ?
Perhaps this is one of those rare last tracks where the audio data continues up to the end of track boundary, and some drives are better than others at assuring that they are sample accurate right at that border (perhaps related to the offset and lead-out reading capabilities?)?
I've had many of this discrepancies between my drive. If the CD is not in AR, I rip it with the Lite-On or Samsung, and verify with the PX-230A. Because the PX-230A has a bigger offset, quite often they differ on the last sample of the last track.
But, this is not the case here. I've read on this forum that the CRC calculation in AccurateRip discard the last sample of the last track precisely to avoid this issue. And I've also check the difference between the tracks, and they occur 2/3 of the way in the track (if I remember correctly - sorry I'm at work).
AccurateRip is not effected by drive offsets and overreading.
I can confirm this is the case in my setup, I've seen EAC CRCs mismatching due to offset differences, but the AccurateRip CRC was always matching.
When there have been about 20 million tracks ripped with AccurateRip you will come across strange happenings, this is one of them. All we can be sure is that 2 different drives give 2 different results, and different people with different discs have had both results.
I'm sorry, but I disagree. We are not talking 20 million tracks, we are talking 14 rips of this CD. And, I'm note sure if people are as paranoid as I am, it seems that people are generally happy with a straight AccurateRip match, and most people don't have the diversity of drives to be able to test that, so maybe the error is more prevalent that this one present instance.
By the way, maybe we could revisit this thread :
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=60617
By weird coincidence, it's also a Lite-On... Same model as mine, but in SATA.
It would be worth (if you want to investigate it) try dBpoweramp R12 to rip and enable c2 error pointers on the Lite-on and Plextor (as they both support) this gives an extra layer of confidence, it would be interesting to see if the results match the ones above.
I'm sorry, but I spent enough time to get setup and validate my EAC workflow, I don't really see what dBpoweramp would give me in this instance. Note that C2 was enabled on the Lite-On (and the Samsung). I've just realised that the PX-230A was in burst mode, and that was an error on my part (but does not change the overall conclusion).
Note that the CD will be quickly in the hands of my wife, and I can't guarantee it will be pristine after that, especially with our kids. That's actually the main reason why I'm ripping my CDs. So, it may take a bit of time before I can do another rip.
Thanks a lot for the interesting discussion, and have fun...
Jean
I think he is just suggesting a quick rip in dBpoweramp, no reason to redo your whole workflow. C2 support is better in dMC then EAC so it would be interesting to see if there is any difference in results.

That and the confidence was 10, which was closer to the 14 of the other tracks. It seems there is a simple split, for the last track some drives (10 submissions agree), other drives (4 agree).
>I'm sorry, but I spent enough time to get setup and validate my EAC workflow
My intention was not for you to change from EAC, just doing my part as elimination of issues, if you try another program on those drives and get the same results then it eliminates EAC as a possible cause of this discrepancy (if you had used dBpoweramp I would ask you to try EAC).

I must apologise for my previous answer. I know realise that using dBpoweramp would add interesting information to this discussion. Which specific version would you want me to try ? I see that I should be able to get R12.4 as a free trial.
Thanks to Greynol in the EAC forum for taking the time to open my eyes on the issue :

Spoon - in addition, as these sorts of issues crop up and evidence points to particular drives not handling these special cases properly, perhaps results from certain drive/firmware combinations should be quietly blacklisted?

I think we should blacklist all drives except for the Plextor PX-230A.
I've seen undetected errors with my Lite-On and my Samsung, so we should ban all Mediatek based drives, which means all Lite-On/Samsung/ASUS. I've seen this type of errors with my old BenQ and my old LG, so we should ban all BenQ (except the PX-230A) and all LG. Pioneer don't report C2, so we should ban that as well. What's left ?
Seriously, I think the situation is not as bad as it looks. By looking at the AR log, it's obvious when this happens. Also, in 99% of cases, my Lite-On gives proper results. You want as many tracks as possible in the AR database. And I think we may be able to narrow down when this happens.
Have fun...

Hi again,
I managed to get dBpoweramp installed and configured. Note that I disabled FUA as I read somewhere that the the Lite-On did not work with FUA.
I did 11 rips before a set of EAC rips and 2 after. That's a huge set of logs, so I'll pick a few...
Very first rip.

1 Tracks Ripped Securely (Warning: sectors had to be re-ripped) (AccurateRip: Different Pressing?)
Ok, we can't always get a secure rip but at least we know there is an error.
All the other rips alternate between those 3 cases :
I had :
no-error, confidence 10 : 1,6,9,14
errors, confidence 10 : 2,5,7,8,10,11,12,13
errors, innacurate : 3,4
The CRC in rip 3 and 4 are differents. The number of errors is different, rip 5 has 9 re-rips. But at least, I did not see the dreaded "confidence 4".
Ok, I'll call that a success.

dBPowerAmp : 14 rips, never happens
EAC : 3 rips, happen twice.
Hmm... Interesting. I think I've now changed my mind about what's could be the cause here. You guys were definitely right to push me around ;-)
I guess we need to get Andre to comment on the subject.
Good night everybody...

Hi Jean, Spoon, Brendan, Eli and whoever else I know from Hydrogenaudio and/or Digital-Inn.
This situation with EAC is pretty interesting. I'm curious to know what happens when you disable C2 pointers in EAC. When this is done, EAC will ask the drive to access different points within a track. It might also be worthwhile to try the rip in burst mode. Maybe one of these changes will make a difference(?).
Quick explanation (hopefully):
Without C2 pointers, EAC reads 27 sectors at a time until 2MB is read and then goes back and does it again. The next pair of 2MB sets will begin with the last 2 sectors of the previous pair for synchronization purposes. With C2 pointers, EAC reads 24 sectors at a time until 2MB is read and then moves on to the next set of 2MB beginning with the last 2 sectors (again for synchronization purposes). If cache flushing is enabled, EAC will read another 2MB prior to moving on to the next 2MB in order to make sure the 2 sectors used for synchronization are read from the disc (with or without the use of C2 pointers).
My limited understanding of dBpoweramp is that all passes (including ultra-secure) are done in burst mode and that no additional synchronization is used.
Lastly, I am concerned that dBpa is telling you that bad rips are secure when using C2 pointers with your Lite-On. This implies that you're getting consistent errors which are not being dropped by C2 pointers. It should not be behaving this way. I was also going to add that it should be safe to increase the maximum number of re-reads when using C2 pointers, but now have reservations in light this issue.

>Lastly, I am concerned that dBpa is telling you that bad rips are secure when using C2 pointers with your Lite-On.
We are seeing a CD with errors right at the end of the track, the occasion when dBpoweramp failed to rip the track:
Track 17: Ripped LBA 322181 to 340190 (4:00) in 0:46. Filename: F:\Music-dBamp\Simple Minds\Simple Minds - The Best of Simple Minds Disc 1 - 17 - I Travel.flac
AccurateRip: Inaccurate (confidence 4) Secure (Warning) [Pass 1, Ultra 1 to 3, Re-Rip 5 Frames]
CRC32: A99AA633
Re-rip Frame: 336063 (00:03:05.093) matched 10 / 14
Re-rip Frame: 336174 (00:03:06.573) matched 10 / 14
Re-rip Frame: 336684 (00:03:13.373) matched 10 / 14
Re-rip Frame: 336685 (00:03:13.386) matched 10 / 14
Re-rip Frame: 336795 (00:03:14.853) matched 10 / 14
Yes the error got past c2 pointer, and was consistant on 5 passes! perhaps c3 is not great on the Lite-on. Those frames which were re-ripped, they might not have been the ones that had the error.
For you to debug the EAC issue, if you can supply 2 wave files to Andre, one with the confidence 10 the other confidence 4, looking at the data he might know what is happening. This is an issue that needs looking into (as 4 other people had the same issue, and must be using EAC).

Hmm...is the issue that the bad (but matching) rips are being submitted from EAC, not dbpa?

To be fair to EAC (and if you have the inclanation), rip 6 times in dBpoweramp with the c2 off and check that it never show the confidence 4 on the liteon.

Hi all,
I've got some interesting new information. But let's start with a raw dump of data, as people may always find bits in there that I may have missed.
I decided to try a few rips at work. My work PC is different, single P4 instead of dual, different drives, different EAC version, same XP-SP2 though. I installed dBpowerAmp R12.4 on this box.
I plugged in my old HP cd16 (a LG GCE-8160B clone) that I was considering for ripping a while ago, before discovering that it was not good enough.
The other drive is the HP DVD 400c (a BenQ dw800a clone) that you have seen in action earlier.
I launched a first rip with the cd16 and dbpower amp and went for luch. When I came back from luch, the PC was dead. No BSOD, just black screen. After a reboot, I was able to get the following log :

Hi again,
Now, of course, we want to know how EAC compare on the same setup.
While I was setting up and configuring dBpoweramp, I did a rip with EAC on the cd16. The rip took around 1h30, including two cooling periods of 10min.

This drive is usually pretty fast, but is bad on scratches. I basically retried every single block on the last third of the song.
Let's move to the HP DVD 400c. Remember that I already ripped on that drive (it was the very first rip I did), and that I found confidence 4 back then. Let's try another rip.

Hi again,
I started scratching my head, and wondered what was the difference between EAC and dBpowerAmp. One of the biggies is that dBpowerAmp does its first rip in burst mode, whereas I configured EAC to use Secure mode.
What about EAC in burst mode ? Let's try on the HP DVD 400c.

Confidence 10 ! Interesting.
I did a total of 4 rips in burst mode with the HP DVD 400c (including the above), and all of them returned confidence 10. The fourth and last rip is below.

So, Geynol was (again) on something when he suggested me to try EAC without C2. The HP DVD 400c does not have C2 reporting (like all BenQ drives), so I can not try that here.
Also, remember that my PX-230A was in burst mode. It was an configuration error on my part, but without it I would probably would have missed this problem entirely. Probably it should stay in burst mode.
Finally, we have still not yet determined which version of the track is the "most correct" one, but I'll work on that soon.
Have fun...

This is an issue that needs looking into (as 4 other people had the same issue, and must be using EAC).
That's an assumption that would deserve to be verified. Remember that in the other thread I linked, the user was using dBpowerAmp.
I expect that you have full access to the database. Would it be possible for you to verify what were the setup of the 10 and the 4 people ? What software they where using, which settings and which drives ? I know that you at least have info about the drives in the database.
Have fun...

That's an assumption that would deserve to be verified. Remember that in the other thread I linked, the user was using dBpowerAmp.Yes, but unlike that user, you're experiencing consistent results with dBpoweramp.
I want to reiterate that all passes performed by dBpa are burst passes and you get the same result when ripping with EAC in burst mode. Busting out this thread can lead to some serious consternation, but let me just offer this post:

Yes, but unlike that user, you're experiencing consistent results with dBpoweramp.
I fully agree, but IMHO we don't have sufficient info to know if the two issues are related or not.
My point is that we should look in the AR database to see what kind of information we can get about the 10 and the 4 matching rips to see if we can confirm or infirm our current hypothesis. I would expect this info to be very interesting, as thhose other rips introduce more diversity.
We may want to make a call for testers on Hydrogenaudio to try to enlarge the test base. Could we track the authors of the rips in the database ? We don't have the source code to inspect, so the only thing we can do is to treat it as a black box and make more elaborate and diverse tests.
I want to reiterate that all passes performed by dBpa are burst passes and you get the same result when ripping with EAC in burst mode.
Yes. I don't fully understand what different about burst mode and secure mode in EAC, what I know is that in all my drives, burst mode is 2 or 3 times faster than secure, even on drives with no cache and C2 pointers. So, I expect something is different. The code path in EAC is different, and the code path in the drive firmware *may* be different, but I don't have enough knowledge here.
When I'm back home, I'll try burst and no C2 on the Lite-On. I'll try secure with the PX-230A. I don't know what to try on the Samsung.
Busting out this thread can lead to some serious consternation, but let me just offer this post:

Once again, you totally lost me, but that was probably not for me.
Note that I believe the EAC sync errors are reported in the log (I would need to check that). I'll pay more attention to sync errors next time.
Thanks again...

Could not wait. With the HP DVD 400c in secure mode (once) and burst mode (once), I could not see any sync errors reported. I know I've seen sync errors in the past with EAC and other CDs.
I had forgotten another burst result, so at last count on HP DVD 400c :
Burst mode : 6 rips with confidence 10
Secure mode (+cache -c2) : 6 rips with confidence 4

Sorry about that. It seems to me that EAC may be incorrectly shifting the data for a best fit during synchronization without reporting an error. I could easily be wrong though, and it wouldn't be the first time.
Regarding what you find in logs, EAC only reports sync and read errors in the Extracting Audio Data dialog window.

I've seen sync errors in the past, so my expectation was that if EAC is finding some sync error in this case it would report it.
Note that, thinking about it, I believe most of the sync errors were on the PX-230 in burst mode. I can not guarantee that I've seen sync errors in secure mode. I'll pay attention.

The last two rips I did on the HP DVD 400c, I explicitely checked the various window dialogs for sync errors, and found none.

Sync errors aren't reported in burst mode and I can see from your logs that EAC is not reporting errors so you would not see a sync or a read error.
My concern is that EAC may be shifting the data without telling you, though I have no way of knowing since I didn't author the program. It would be useful to compare the two versions though I concede that even if the two files differ by a shift somewhere within one of the tracks (resulting from repeated or omitted samples) it wouldn't mean that EAC is altering the data after getting it from the drive. It could simply be in the way EAC asks for data that causes the drive to give different results, whatever the differences are between the two versions.
It would be good to know the offset of your pressing relative to mine so that I could try burning a CD and test it with various drives to help rule out a consistent defect in the pressing in the event that I can also recreate the problem.

You are right, what I see sometimes in burst mode are "timing issues". I saw some tonight with the SH-S162L. And you are right that they are not reported in the log.
I did not saw any sync error, timing issue or read error with the HP DVD 400c.

I'll try to finish the analysis of the tracks themselves. Ripping this CD over and over takes time. I've not made any progress with my big stack of CDs.

I'll try to do that, but that would assume that the only difference between different pressing is an offset. With the way the cd16 and the SH-S162L react (errors all over the place), I believe there is a genuine issue on the CD itself.

More ripping. I'll start with the LH-20A1P.
First, I did check that in secure mode, it's not giving me any sync or read error. The extra rip I did gave me a confidence 4.

6th rip (17) was an error.
It seems that if I rip two tracks together, I'm less likely to have 17 in error. Note that while the CD change speed, I get a timing issue (in the first track ripped).

Ok, so the PX-230A is no better than my other drives, basically confidence 4 in secure mode and confidence 10 in burst mode. Lucky that I had the drive in burst mode in the first place, otherwise I would have missed this issue entirely.
I'm done ripping this CD. I would like to know what data there is in the AccurateRip database.

It would be a major undertaking to trace back the submissions to the program, it is possible but the data does not flow backwards like that, I do not see it as required, it seems clear the EAC in the secure mode is giving wrong results on that CD with multiple drives. This will be right at the end of the last track, and as I said if you can provde Andre with 2 wav files he should find the issue.
The other issue linked, is not related, there a drive goes wrong mid disc and stays wrong, it goes wrong in any program and it is only AccurateRip that finds such an error, c2 and secure ripping would never find that.

Might perchance this be related to the behaviour addressed in http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/archive/index.php/t-12883.html ?
(Maybe this discussion should be redirected to EAC's forums though.)

That's a shame, because I was sure there was some interesting data in there.
For me, it's not clear what happening, and I don't think it's as simple as saying "it's EAC". I've ripped over 100 CDs with this procedure, I had various kind of errors, but this is the only time I found that error. Moreover, it happens only on half my drive. So, clearly it is related to a unique combination of factors, the right disk, the right drive and EAC. If it was a bug only in EAC, it would be much more prevalent.
Note also that we have not determined conclusively which is the right version of the track.
This will be right at the end of the last track, and as I said if you can provde Andre with 2 wav files he should find the issue.
The error is *NOT* at the end of the track, that was the first thing I checked. I've got many last-track mismatch because of offset differences between my drives. So, it was the first thing I checked. The difference occur 2/3rd of the way in the file.
Actually, I would like Andre to get back to me, but so far I have not heard from him.

Jean

Hi again,
While puzzling over the result, I realised that only half my drives show the problem (DVD 400c, 20A1P and PX-230A) and the other half does not (cd16, SH-S162L). I was trying to find a pattern.
The only pattern I found is that all drives having issues have a cache, and all drives having no issues don't have a cache. Is it relevant ? Who knows...
Anyway, I decided to try the 20A1P disabling the cache avoidance in EAC (don't try this at home), to see if the cache avoidance routine in EAC has any effect.

Note also that we have not determined conclusively which is the right version of the track.
At first glance, it would be as simpe as:
- EAC in one mode gives RESULT1
- EAC in some other mode gives RESULT2
- dBpoweramp gives RESULT 2,
But from your results on the diff mid-way through the track, I can only speculate about the reason; might it be that this pressing has an error (occuring on each CD in this pressing), which will be left unnoticed by "burst mode" rips?

While puzzling over the result, I realised that only half my drives show the problem (DVD 400c, 20A1P and PX-230A) and the other half does not (cd16, SH-S162L).This is because those two drives had trouble ripping the track in secure mode (which I'm betting has to do with synchronization problems). This is pretty clear from the results you've posted using the SH-S162L which gives an AR match in burst mode (a mode that makes no attempt to spot errors and recover them). You didn't post any results using the CD-Writer cd16b in burst mode otherwise you might find that it can get an AR match as well.
The only pattern I found is that all drives having issues have a cache, and all drives having no issues don't have a cache. Is it relevant ? Who knows...It shouldn't be. Caching vs. non caching only involves reading an extra 2MB after each 2MB burst is either checked for C2 errors or compared twice (depending on the C2 setting) and reading an extra 2MB between each additional re-read if EAC has determined that re-reads are necessary.
It's pretty clear that this is an EAC problem. Please send me a PM over at Digital-Inn so I can help you determine which version of your rip is correct. You haven't responded over there for a while, so I thought you lost interest.

You didn't post any results using the CD-Writer cd16b in burst mode otherwise you might find that it can get an AR match as well.
If you want, I could try that, but I don't think it will be revelatory.

You have a better understanding of the internals of EAC, I was stabbing in the dark. Now that Andre is on board, hopefully we should be more directed.

I personally don't know.

Well, I actually know which one is the most correct of the two.
I did not post because I had nothing to add, and I'm not impatient. I know that Andre needs time to digest all the data.
Thanks very much for your help.
