the first couple of CD's I tried downloaded, at x9 and x14, but the next few cd's ripped at x4, is there a way to keep the cd's ripping faster preferably x14 the reason I am trying this out and thinking of buying is to have faster rips

Your drive may have switched from DMA to PIO hence the reduction in ripping speed. This can happen if you try to rip a CD with defects that has to be reread a number of times.

Many CD drives set the drive speed when a disc is inserted (for the condition of CD), try putting a CD in which ripped at x14, see if it is still x14?

If the drives maxium speed is around x24 then ripping is likely to give max speed / 2, it is how many drives are.
