For what it's worth, I found a "LowerFilters" entry in the registry for the optical drives. It seems to be linked to "INTEL Rapid Storage Technology" software I have installed.

The system is INTEL based (CPU and most chipsets) and I remember having all kinds of horrible problems when I first set it up and decided not to install that software because I did not think that I needed the features (something to do with SSD caching and RAID I think). So uninstalling will probably lead to even more trouble.
I will try installing a newer version of the software instead. I also wonder what just deleting that filter driver registry entry for the optical drives will do. Does Windows automatically use its own native drivers then?

The intel drivers should not be used for CD Rom...
Filters are not drivers, they are code which everything CDROM passes through.
