How to calculate ReplayGain without reencoding?

    Hi,

I have bought a digital FLAC album on the web but there is one song which sound level is much lower than other tracks. How could I reapply the album ReplayGain DSP without reencoding the album?

    Thanks.

Install the utility codec [ReplayGain] and convert your files to this.

Notice the difference between "ReplayGain" and ReplayGain (Apply). The latter changes your audio. The former is the one you want to use on a RG-aware player: it merely tags your files. Fully reversible.

Is it possible to calculate iTunes Norm values using the utility codec?

I know you can do it when you convert the file via the dsp, but that option isn't available with the utility codec (nor is the EUB128 option)

Re: How to calculate ReplayGain without reencoding?

I've now used this (works fine) but have a question.
I use FreeFileSync to backup my music drive to a second drive but have noticed that the files I've added Replaygain (and itunes NORM) to using this utility codec don't show up as needing to be copied. Looking at it it seems that it doesn't change the date modified or the size of the file so FreeFileSync doesn't pick up that it needs to be copied.

Is there any reason why it doesn't change the file properties? Is it intentional or is there any way I can get it to change the properties so it can be recognised as a changed file?

Yes we preserve the update date and time.

Ok thanks for the confirmation. Is there an easy way to update the properties?

My first thought was that when I process the files with Replay Gain I could add a tag. I could then remove said tag with Edit-ID which would update the properties.
However, again it might be me, but when I add the ID Tag processing DSP and set it to add a tag - nothing happens. It adds the replaygain data, but not the ID tag.

Does ID Tag Processing not work with the Replaygain utility ? Or am I using it wrong?

I guess the other option is to batch convert the files with the replaygain utility, batch convert with the ID Tag utility to add a tag, and then batch convert for a third time to remove the tag.

You could try converting the files to [ID Tag Update] after the replaygain.

Re: How to calculate ReplayGain without reencoding?

I am also stumped on how to add the Replaygain tags without re-encoding as the 'encoding to' field forces an encoder to be selected by the user. I have a possibly incorrect memory that in prior versions one could select an option in the encoder field that allowed for a replay gain only option. I tried 'Test' but it fails to write the Replaygain tags. Of course I have 'Replaygain" added as a DSP effect with 'Write track gain" selected on the pop-up window. If I re-encode my audio files the Replaygain tags are added just fine but I don't want the audio files re-encoded. Am I missing an obvious selection?

You would install the utility codec [Replay Gain] and convert the files to this codec, this does not reencode the file.

    Spoon,

thanks for the excellent [Replay Gain] codec.
One question though, selecting single tracks work fine, how can multiple albums within a directory tree be selected for automated calculation of the Replay Gain?

    Thanks again!

    Use Batch Converter.
