Converting mp4 video to m4a video for use with iTunes

I've been looking for a codec to convert mp4 video into an iTunes compatible codec, either apple lossless (m4a) or an mp4 video which will be recognised in iTunes. So far I've had no luck, even when searching the internet there doesn't seem to be anything out there which will do the job. This forum is my last chance and I don't want to pay for any software that will not do the thing I require.

iTunes should recognize/import/play .mp4 files, without conversion. Did you attempt to play the file(s) in Quicktime?
