I have just upgraded to the latest version of Dbpoweramp music converter, as I need to convert loads ( about 400gb ) of wma lossless files into MP3 but after installing the product I don't seem to be able to do this. Is it me or am I doing something wrong ? The batch converter has the filter to not do mp3's ( which is good as there are some mp3's already in my collection ) but I don't seem to be able to do a batch convert of wma to MP3.

Cheers,
I did try to update to the newest drivers Version: 6.1.7600.16385 is the current but still a no go. I need to be able to rip cds really anywhere.

When it comes to ripping or burning CD how good is an external device for the task. I know if I have it connected with esata it is accentually an internal device as far a data throughput but I only have a external enclosure available for a Pata device on the way.

I know that FLAC supports multiple vorbis comments with the same field name but with different values. For example, a file might contain these comments:

COMPOSER=Gillian Welch
COMPOSER=David Rawlings

as opposed to a single comment like:

COMPOSER=Gillian Welch and David Rawlings

We've noticed that AMG (and perhaps other databases) often return metadata like this:

Composer: Gillian Welch; David Rawlings

I don't see the advantage or reason for wanting to separate co-writers or a performing duet into separate tags. In fact, it seems inappropriate, as it might cause one of the two (or more, if there are more than two) songwriters or artists to either be overlooked in a search of a database or in a display on a media player (iPod) or GUI (iTunes) assuming for this example that the FLAC files were converted to MP3.

Where did this practice of splitting values into separate comment fields originate, and why? It certain should not make it any easier for search engine purposes.

We'd rather not do it, and we'd rather be able to combine this information when CD Ripper ingests it as values separated by a semicolon.

Comment, answers or suggestions welcome....especially the answers.
Thanks in advance.

A lot of the time, when we insert a CD to rip using the FLAC encoder, some or a lot of the metadata fields are filed in right away with the appropriate or nearly-correct values. However, when going to the Review Metadata Matches window, the column headings for AMG, GD3, MusicBrainz and FreedB are dimmed (greyed out) and no matches are indicated.

There seems to be no way to understand where the tag information originated. Was it included in CD-Text, did it come from some other database or what? How can we tell? This is more than just a mystery to us that we'd like to solve. We'd really like to "understand" what we're doing as we rip thousands of albums, one-at-a-time, carefully ensuring that all of the tags are complete, consistent and correct.

Where can we learn more about the use of CD-Text, CD-UPC, and CD-ISRC as sources of metadata.

The question remains, however: "How can we determine the source of the metadata when it's not obvious where it came from?"

Thanks in advance.

...and how are they mapped when using CD Ripper to rip a CD to different file formats or the Converter to transcode to a different format? Is there a comprehensive table that shows what tags these on-line databases support and how the various formats ingest or ignore them?

In our case, we are ripping CDs for our radio station library using the FLAC encoder. We add the information in the standard fields listed (Artist, Album Artist, Genre and so on) as well as in a few custom fields that we've added, such as UPC and Label. It's not clear if any (or which) of the on-line databases retain or ingest these tags when we submit the the metadata before ripping. It's also not clear what happens to this information when transcoding from one file format to a different one.

Furthermore, I've seen CDs that have had a few tags returned from one or more of the databases with non-standard Vorbis Comments such as STYLE=xxxx. Where did that usage originate? Is there a 'common usage' standard that we should know about for extending the range of Vorbis Comments. (Note that we are doing just that for our own needs, but perhaps re-inventing the wheel, or worse yet, spinning ours.)

I know that dBpoweramp (by default) maps some common field names to their Vorbis comment equivalents, such as Comment --> Description, but when trying to sort out the bigger picture, it would seem reasonable that somewhere there must be a master table that shows the equivalent metadata field names and values, how they relate to one another depending on file format, and which of those are actually ingested and used by the various on-line database sites.

We tag our FLAC files as best we can according to the Vorbis Comment standards, such as they are, but we have a need to add additional VCs, such as ALBUMARTIST, UPC, COPYRIGHT and so on. It would be good to know if this information is going to be retained, lost or ignored when transcoding to another file format or when submitting to on-line databases.

Can you shed a lot of light on this subject, or point us to the resource(s) that can illuminate this topic?

Thanks in advance...
