I have used the command line version of LAME as follows:

lame.exe --alt-preset standard 2.mp3
3.mp3
LAME version 3.90.3 MMX (http://www.mp3dev.org/)
CPU features: i387, MMX (ASM used), 3DNow!, SIMD
Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition band: 19383 Hz - 19916 Hz
Encoding 2.mp3 to 3.mp3
Encoding as 44.1 kHz VBR(q=2) j-stereo MPEG-1 Layer III (ca. 7.3x) qval=2
Frame | CPU time/estim | REAL time/estim | play/CPU | ETA
1813/1816 (100%)| 0:15/ 0:15| 0:15/ 0:15| 2.9775x| 0:00

average: 181.6 kbps LR: 864 (47.58%) MS: 952 (52.42%)

Writing LAME Tag...done

but in the explorer popup info box it displays:

As you can see 'encoded by' only displays LAME and nothing about the alt present.

The older versions of Lame didn't write propper complete lame tags AFAIK, you are best trying lame 3.97

Spoon,

that works however this time it partially shows Alt Present Standard (i.e. Present Standard). I did download the following dll and replace it with the original lame_enc.dll that comes with dpa, dbpoweramp reads it as (Alt Present Standard) which is what i want (yay!) unfortunately i have deleted the exe so i cant use LAME through command line :-( is there anyway to know the version so i can chase it?

here's the link to it:

the strange thing is if i use the exe through command line and encode a APS mp3 it says encoded by: lame 3.90 if i use the same .DLL (overwrote original dll in compression/) and it put through dbpoweramp it says lame 3.90 alt preset standard

Is there a reason for using the older versions of Lame? 3.96.1 is the current recommendation.

actually the newer lame3.97b2 is the recomened version (by hydrogenaudio) but that is becide the point..

lame up to v3.93 sounds different than 3.94 and higher, there are different commandline options for tuning. In my personal testing, I have found the older version(s) to be better for low bitrates. I have to agree with lemar's choice of lame 3.90.3 (i use that one myself).

about all that could be done to fix the tags from this version, would be to compile it yourself and incorporate the newer tagging stuffs from the newer lame. that or edit the tag afterwards (probably easier)
