View Full Version : Transferring file from Yahoo! Music Unlimited

I have been trying Sveta for the past couple of hours. I want to use Sveta to copy files from Yahoo! Music Unlimited (YMU) to my SanDisk m230 portable audio player. Sveta can copy the files over, but due to the way YMU names their files (e.g. "01-0 - Scorpions - Blackout.wma"), the SanDisk m230 always shows "No Files". I also don't see a way to set the filenames in Yahoo! Music Engine.

Is there a way to make Sveta rename the files as it copies them over? Using the music file tag data to rename the files would probably be the best, otherwise a way to specify how to parse the filename, similar to how you can define the filename when RIP'ing from CD.

Maybe this is possible already and I am just missing something. I am using Sveta Beta 5.

Thanks,

-Dean

First, Sveta r5 final is out. There probably aren't any changes since your version, but it couldn't hurt to make sure. If you purchased a registered version of Sveta at least one week ago, use the Registered Download Retrieval on the Registration page to get a new registered install.
As for the file name problem, I know there is an Arrange utility codec in Codec Central. You just need a non-expired PowerPack to use it.
Even then, though, I wouldn't think that the filename is the problem. If you DO rename the files, will they transfer? I think the transfer problem may be that the files are protected and Sveta cannot decode them, but I'm not sure.

Yahoo music files are protected, Sveta is not able to alter the protection so that it is compatible with your player.

I'm not asking for Sveta to remove the protection, I have a legal license (i.e. I pay for the service) to transfer the files to my player and my player is supported by Yahoo! Music Unlimited. Sveta R5 does move the files to my player without problems related to the license or DRM as far as I can tell. I can see the files listed on my MP3 player within Sveta (albeit with the wrong artist/track info) and also within Windows Explorer. Perhaps I am not explaining what I am looking for properly. I am using the Sveta Portable Audio Window Media Driver with my SanDisk m230.

Are you saying that Sveta should not be able to even copy the files over to my player if the files are protected? Does renaming DRM protected files go against the license agreement (I didn't see that restriction listed anywhere)? When Sveta copies files to the portable device, does it keep the filename intact or does it rename them or try to create a certain directory structure on the portable device? If so, can we customize the way this works?

Thanks,

Dean

Can you play these files in WMP?
If so, can you edit the file names in WMP (you could also try dBpowerAMP Music Converter, aka dMC, for this though I think that this might be less likely to work)? EDIT: Does WMP recognize your player when it is hooked up to your PC?
Do you have the Power Pack for dMC (this would increase the tag editing power of dMC although it would not change the ability of dMC to handle these files if the true issue is DRM).

The other possibility would be if you could use the Tag Editing feature of Sveta Explorer to edit the tags on your player. This mat not be supported in all players but your Sveta Help file does give the followingdescription of this feature:
Tag Editing
A number of players support meta data editing, select audio file(s) right click >> Edit Tag. Depending upon the player, updated ID Tags might only be written to player's database and not the file ID Tag. Multiple files can be edited, only changing one field, such as Album will leave existing Track fields untouched for each of the files.

Do you know whether your player supports this and/or if your Yahoo! files will tolerate this?

Can you give a fuller example of how the files you are currently transferring to your player with Sveta are mis-tagged and how you would like them to be tagged? I am assuming that the files you have transferred to your player using Sveta, while mis-labelled, actually play. If they do not play, this would suggest a bigger problem.

Best wishes,
Bill

The reason I mentioned DRM is that Sveta cannot decode these files to send them. Sveta cannot interface with the WMP lisence, so it is unable to decode these files. I think this might be your problem. If you rename your tracks to just <Artist> - <Track>.wma, do they send properly? If they don't, then Sveta cannot send these encoded tracks over.

I'll have to play around with this some more and post back my findings. Hope to have some more time in the next couple of days.

Thanks,

Another thought:
Try using the Smart conversion button to arrange for Sveta not to convert your Yahoo! wma files while transferring them.

There does also seem to be other reports (involving other files/players) wherein files are transferred and do not show up in the player display (although they do seem to get transferred as data files). When I get a chance, I will try to track down some of these threads and see if there is anything to be learned from them that might help in your case. I suspect it could be a newbie type of issue involving getting Sveta synchronized properly with the player. But I don't have much hands-on experience with Sveta and none at all with your player or with your Yahoo! files (except for the terms of use which are quite limiting).

Best wishes,
Bill

What Sveta driver are you using for your player, out of my curiosity? It sounds like the database may not be updating on the player.

I am using the Sveta Window Media Driver with my SanDisk m230.

I did a little more testing with protected WMA files from Yahoo! Unlimited, non-protected WMA files and also MP3 files, all resulted in the same problem, that being they are transfered to my player but don't show up when I try to play them on the MP3 player.

Also, it does not appear to be a filename issue as I have tried a few different formats. Files that Yahoo Music Engine copies over show up fine, but files in the same filename format copied over with Sveta don't show up.

I am not asking Sveta to convert the files since most of my files are DRM-protected, Sveta would not be able to convert them anyway from what I understand.

It sounds like Sveta isn't updating the device's database. Does it do this if you close Sveta, disconnect the player and then try to open the file on the player?

A few ideas from the Sveta Help file:

Nearly all portable portable players Sveta is able to work with are USB based, before trying your player with Sveta confirm the player works with the supplied manufacturer Manager program. If it fails to work with the manufacturers program, it is unlikely that Sveta will be able to work either! All USB devices should appear in Device Manager (Start >> Settings >> Control Panel >> System >> Hardware >> Device Manger), browse to Universal Serial Bus Controllers the player should appear with no '!' or red mark through the icon (which might indicates the USB device is not functioning correctly).
Can you load these files without Sveta?
Does your device show up in your Windows Device Manager OK.

Should Sveta not upload an audio file correctly (for example a .m4a file is uploaded to an iPod, but it appears in the 'Data' tab) then check that dBpowerAMP has the correct Codecs installed, look in Start >> Programs >> dBpowerAMP Music Converter >> Configuration >> dMC Configuration on the Installed Decoders page, codecs such as WMA, m4a, mp4, Ogg Vorbis have to be installed separately from [Codec Central].
Do you have the dMC wma codec installed from Codec Central? Does it show as being among your installed codecs in dMC Configuration (go Start>All Programs>dBpowerAMP Music Converter>Configuration>dBpowerAMP Music Converter Configuration)?

Also, are you using the Smart button and telling Sveta NOT to convert wma files (they will rather transfer as is)?

Best wishes,
Bill

My device shows up in Device Manager under "Windows Portable Devices", not under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Using Yahoo Music Engine I can successfully transfer these files to my portable device.

Do you have the dMC wma codec installed from Codec Central? Does it show as being among your installed codecs in dMC Configuration (go Start>All Programs>dBpowerAMP Music Converter>Configuration>dBpowerAMP Music Converter Configuration)?
===Codecs===
Installed Compression Codecs (Write)
...
Windows Media Audio V9.1: Release 1 [ .wma ]

Installed Input Codecs (Read)
...
Windows Media Audio Input Decoder: .wma; .asf; .wmv

Also, are you using the Smart button and telling Sveta NOT to convert wma files (they will rather transfer as is)?
I have Sveta set to Send As Is.

Yes, WMP does recognize my player. Just to double check, I just used WMP to copy a file to my player and I am able to play it on my player. Thanks.
