if i use DBpoweramp, i get a rip that has quite a few cracks and stuff in it cos of the copy protection

and if i use EAC is just does error correction but wont get a consistant rip for the same reason

is there any way of me getting a decent rip from a copy protected CD

It temporarily disables Auto-Start, which is sometimes used to start copy-protection programs from the CD to prevent it from being ripped.

So is the copy protection on all these CDs slightly different

im trying to rip the new coldplay album, and the suggestions you made didnt work (this is annoying as i bought it to put on my zen which is what i use to listen to all my music). if you hold shift windows still seems to load the CD and realise its got some kind of copy protection. The crackles and pops are really gay.

has anyone been able to rip the new coldplay album.. and with what program

and are there any other things i could try with dBpoweramp?

Try turning off "Table of Contents" detection, as mentioned in the thread you linked to above.
Also, when you said you held down shift, did you hold it down for 10-15 seconds after you inserted the CD? You hold it down while you hear the CD spinning up in the drive, and let go a few seconds after it spins back down. Also, I think it is the left shift key in particular.
