Stereo to mono conversion

I have unsuccessfully been attempting to convert from stereo wav to mono flac. maybe the flac coder doesn't allow for this param, but surely it must. i'm sure in the gnu version on posix i could do this from the shell. so instead, i tried converting from stereo wav to mono mp3. the resultant mp3 was blank. any ideas why? if i could specify which channel it should source from, that would be helpful too. i have a lot of stereo wavs, so any help here would save me from editing each one and resaving it and then encoding it. Help.

Have you tried converting from a stereo wav to a mono wav? Does that work?

Okay, tried that, but no luck. Stereo wav to mono wav results in a pretty much silent mono track.

Are your Stereo wav files 16 bit, 2 channels, 44.1 kHz?
(If not, what are their properties?)
