What music player is best?

I've decided to recompile my music collection as sonic stage doesn't allow me to move files to my new computer. Is itunes my best option for a program that compresses the files and retains good quality (and stores them as a library). I have also heard a lot about copy right protection for itunes, is that only through the store or might i run into the same problem with itunes as i am with sonic stage?
