What made you comvert them if you don't know what plays them and how big they are as files?

.dAP plays .ape files.

Monkeys is a lossless codec. This means that when you convert an ucompressed .wav file to .ape there is no loss of audio quality. The .ape file will be about 1/2 of the original uncompressed .wav file size.

You were converting .mp3 - which is not a lossless codec- to a lossless codec. So your file ends up taking 1/2 of the size of the original .wav .

It is useless to convert from lossy to lossless as it will not improve audio quality.

Foobar2000 will also play APE files.

Christina is correct - you should never transcode from lossy to lossless. You get a huge filesize penalty with no obvious benefit and certainly no difference in sound quality.

noob post. (no offense, it's just a lil' funny)

stick to your mp3s. DO NOT CONVERT to a lossless format unless you like to waste time like me. MP3s are lossy, and like imom said, lossy should never be converted to lossless.
