hey evryone,

I just downloaded napster 14 day free trial version. Last night I downloaded 423 songs to my music folder. When I try to get the songs to Itunes (For transfer to my Ipod) , it gives an error saying it can't import them because they are protected WMA format. So I got the DB converter. But when I try to run it, it dosen't have a WMA format "files type". (I run Windows XP Home ) Please help seeing as how this is highly frustrating

If anyone could give a step-by-step tutorial for converting WMA into Itunes acceptable format, then I would be very thankful.

ok dav3 if you looked at the page containing dMC (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm)

Convert from one format to another, just about every audio type is supported: mp3, mp4, Windows Media Audio (wma), Ogg Vorbis, AAC, Monkeys Audio, FLAC and many others [Codec downloads], whilst preserving ID Tags.

you would have realized you must download the wma/mp4 codecs. Go to the Codecs Central page (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central.htm) and get the codecs yourself. You should be able to convert your files then.

HOWEVER, you said your music files are protected. Did you know, dav3, that protected music files can't be converted? That's because it would be illegal for a program to convert protected music files. You need to use Auxiliary Input to re-record the music and THEN convert it again. Auxiliary Input is already integrated into dMC, just use it from there.

I can't work the Auxilary Input thing. I don't really understand how to use it. I get the concept, but I don't understnd the program.

PLZ: gimme a tut. for recording my 423 songs into unprotected WMA.
After that I understand how to use the Converter.

Do you realise that means you will have to either:

1. Burn all those tunes to CDs (probably using the Napster burner (if there is one) and then rip those CDs to an iTunes-compatible format onto your hard-drive.

OR

2. Play all those tunes and record them to your needed format at the same time, using a program such as DMC's Auxilliary Input. Either way, you have a long task ahead of you! You should have read the Napster "Conditions of Use" before you downloaded all those songs!

There may be illegal (?) software around to convert your files. JUst search around.

good luck dav3. I can't explain what Adaywayne said any better. He already did a good job explaining. Now you have 423 songs to reburn....:(

For goodness sakes people... lets try a wonderful addition to the World Wide Web entitled Google.

Neil, you've said that in multiple threads, and you've been corrected MULTIPLE times... YOU CAN CONVERT DRM PROTECTED FILES! YOU CAN CAN CAN CAN CAN! You just have to either know what you're doing, or you have to at least be able to use Google! A DRM (a realistic one) does not exist that cannot be broken, that is the glory of computers... we cant even produce random numbers, so everything will have a pattern of some sort so we can track what is going on. It may be difficult, but it can and will always be done.

Is it illegal to remove the encryption from files? Yes. Is it illegal to stick a tape in a VCR and record a TV show? Yes. Is it illegal for me to capture Family Guy off of my video card? Yes. Is it illegal to go 80mph in a 55mph zone? Yes (as an Indiana State Trooper cleared up for me this morning :vmad: ). However, if you are being a responsible person then the legality of removing DRM shouldnt really be an issue. If you have taken your Napster, MusicMatch, iTunes, etc files and simply made it so you can convert them to another format FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL USE, then I would have a very hard time being convinced that Apple, Napster, Microsoft, MusicMatch, or the RIAA would be pounding on your door, or even mailing you a letter.

My point is not to berate you Mr. Neil, just to make people aware. It is possible to remove DRM from most music, so that one could change their Apple M4P to an MP3, OGG, WAV, or AAC file. (The list goes on and on, I obviously just picked Apple...) So the problem isnt really with people being able to remove the DRM, it is instead with people removing it and then sharing the resulting files. I have spent over $300 on the iTunes Music Store and have removed the encryption from every file (I still have the originals though), and have all of them converted to MP3. I also tried Napster's 2 week free trial, which I must say I believe is going to be their downfall. Because as dav3 has found, he can download 400+ songs, convert them to WAV and then go where he wants with them.

No matter how much I would like to believe that Microsoft or Apple is full of a bunch of idiots, theyre not. They know the same things we do, they know that somewhere out there there is a guy in a basement (or an office) with a bunch of free time breaking their encryption and then putting the solution out there. It is obvious to people at hymn-forum.org that Apple has been reading the boards over there, and looking through the code of the software that is available there. This is so obvious because Apple keeps making little tweaks to their DRM code to beat certain specific things that the programs use. It seems as though they are almost amused...

So now that this has gotten very very long-winded, I'm done. I've made my points, and now I'm sure this will be considered flame-bait. Enjoy!

WHOA whoa whoa whoa, iTunesIsEvil, I wasn't telling him/her that copy protection can't be removed. I was just letting him/her know that copy protection is a pain, while it can be removed, it shouldn't even happen in the first place because there are services that already have unprotected music for grabs.

Yes, I know: Google is your best friend. It's mine as well. :)

Seems like a contradiction mate :) "getting out a large wooden spoon and giving the pot another stir"

HOWEVER, you said your music files are protected. Did you know, dav3, that protected music files can't be converted?

Unless of course you mean that removed and converted are two different things.

Nice links iTunesisEvil. I may just download the Napster trial to try it out!

UGH!!!! Get this straight, most people dun know how to go thru the process of removing copy protection so i just say you can't so they can move onto some other music service that doesn't have copy protected music so they'll stop bugging us about copy protection crap. :)

Perhaps this is why they're asking neil?

It's (personally) not bothering me, and until it bothers Spoon, then I imagine he'll let these people post, and people will continue to answer the posts. I dont mind helping them out (refer to my signature), I enjoy it. I like the iTMS, I like the quality, and I like the selection, but I was mad about the DRM too, so I asked on some forums. Thats how I got help... I think other people have the right to do that too! If you do not like the posts, you are not required to respond to them, just like I'm not.

the energy here would be better spent in creating a FAQ on this subject and then pointing people to the FAQ.

What's an MP4 ?

And remember dMC is about audio files, not video.

If your player is defective, you need to get support from where you bought it from, not here.
