random?

I am wonderring how the "random" feature works. It seems like when I start up dAP in random mode, I hear many of the same songs over and over, even from one day to the next. I have a few thousannd music files, and would love to know if there is a way to hear a larger mix. I have not messed with the preference settings at all on any songs. Suggestions would be appreciated.
