-----------------------

Hi everybody,

I have converted the music I downloaded from iTunes from M4P to MP3. It works PERFECTLY !!!! The thing that's good, is that once you converted them, you can put too many MP3 songs in your MP3 player!! What I mean is : I converted a song (A Storm Is Coming from the Lord Of The Rings). The size in M4P was 2860 KB and in MP3 it's only 995 KB and the quality did not change !!!

If you want a proof, just send me a song in M4P and I'll convert it to MP3 and send it bakc to you !!

Let me know and I'll tell you how that works. It's a piece of cake!! Don't bother yourself looking for MP4 converters!!

Take care!!!

You don't have to download a program to do it. Just put the songs on a CD and then import them back into your play list as MP3 files.

That is exactly all you have to do, Export them from iTunes to a cd and then export them from the cd back to your computer. I prefer to use Windows media player when I export them back to my computer, that way I can convert them to WMA files. Very easy!

actually its not...u cannot use itunes to convert protected (ie. acc/m4p from music store) to unprotected (ie. mp3). use ur brains, that would undemine the whole reason for protected music in the first place

Here is what you have to do:
1. Burn the the M4P's onto a CD.
2. When it has finished burning, enter that CD into your computer again.
3. Click on "Audio CD" under "source" on the left side of your screen in itunes.
4. Then right click on the track you want to convert to an MP3.
5. Select "convert to MP3"
6. Once it has finished converting, copy that file to somewhere else on your computer (ex. C/Documents and Settings/User/My Documents/My Music)
7. Copy it again from where you just pasted it, and paste it into your MP3 player. (this is at least how to do it for my Nomad Jukebox).

Hope it helps!

If you want to keep the track details (name, artist, album), don't take the CD out after it has finished burning.
Also under "source", on the left side of your screen, you might see "Purchased Music" with a picture of a CD next to it instead of "udio CD"

The whole process is a lot of work, but it works. If anyone has a better way that is still free, let me know.

I like the concept for M4P to MP3 -- however, the license prevented me from doing that. The M4P format prevents me from getting my iTunes songs onto my Pocket PC, so I'm going to just use iTunes for organizing Mp3's and buy them elsewhere.

I've burned the MP4s to a CD, then looked for "Audio CD" on the left hand side of iTunes, but it is not there. Help! What am I doing wrong? Is there something wrong with the way I am burning the CD? If I try to burn the MP4 using my burning software (Nero) instead of iTunes, Nero can't even recognize the MP4 file.

Any help is appreciated...Thanks.

iTunes really pisses me off. They say it's no problem using windows to burn cd's from music files purchased from iTunes but IT DOES NOT WORK.

Do not buy songs from Itunes if you have a windows pc and plan on burning cd's for your car or any other purpose.

Another way is to run a stereo patch cable from the speaker or headphone jack on your sound card to the line-in jack, then use recording software (I use Record Producer) to record the output from the player software -Real Player or Quick Time. Start the player first, then the recorder. It's real easy.

Holy smokes!

Why not use dMC Auxiliary Input instead of patch cable and anything else including Record Producer? That's total overkill :D

Maybe I am missing something, but why not burn the the M4p to a disk, and then rip the audio files to an MP3. Assuming you are using a M4P software that allows you to burn audio cds i.e. Itunes.

No need to burn a CD. You just need HYMN software !

The method to do this is to use iTunes to burn the M4P's (or M4A's) to a CD. Then use something like the free version of MusicMatch JukeBox, available here: http://www.musicmatch.com/download/free/?OS=pc&MODE=input&DID=&OEM=MMD&LANG=&SOURCE=getbasic_jbpromo , and RIP the CD into nice, usable MP3s. It works just great, though from what I read M4A and M4P are better audio formats than MP3, not that anyone playing the files on an MP3 player would really be able to tell the difference.

Very easy. To avoid confusion just use the burning software in iTunes. Create a new playlist on the left side and put the purchased music in there. Put a cd in and click burn disc on the top left side. Any problems, just write back here. Hope this helps.

burning one M4P to CD and then ripping and converting to MP3 is time consuming and expensive.
Here's what I do.
1. Acquire your m4p and bring it into ITunes if not already DL from ITunes.
2. Get and open "WireTap" from http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/freebies/
3.Since you would normally listen to your new song anyway it won't take any extra time to (a) click record button in WireTap and then double click the song in ITunes. WireTap is now recording your song into AIFF format.
4. You can now convert it to MP3. I use "mAC3dec". (It also does batch converting).
5. I then use MP3Rage to tag it.
Note: I don't notice any loss of sound quality. But then again I'm 65 and have appreciable hearing loss.

This is free way to do it:

First find out that you have itunes 4.6**
then go to http://www.hymn-project.org/
download iopener from their download section, (choose zip file)
Unlock all your files with it, they will become *.m4a
Then download xilist wma mp3 converter, it will change all your *.m4a files to mp3
and you are done.

**If you don't have itunes 4.6 coz you rushed to download 4.7 then browse in http://www.hymn-project.org/ someone there is offering a link for 4.6 download

Works fine for me all my mp4 are now mp3. Good luck.

To all the people that say just use itunes to convert itunes encrypted audio to mp3.

THAT DOESN'T WORK. You cannot do this because the file is encrypted.

either burn to audio cd and import or use some sort of software conversion like Hymn (which doesn't work for me but has worked for others).

Robin-
You may want to try this link here for decoding your .omg files (assuming they are Atrac files): http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=6087
On the offchance that your files may be somewhat different you might want to consider this link for a similar solution for converting Sony oma files to wav and mp3:
http://home.hetnet.nl/~thomas_7/1Wire/1-wire.html

As Christina mentions, if you can play them you may be able to record them off of your sound card either using dBpowerAMP Auxilary Input or a programs such as Tunebite (see: http://www.tunebite.com/ ).

Now if I may sound a somewhat cautionary note. Right now you are living with files that are a headache because you cannot convert them as you would like. This is because of digital rights management efforts on Sony's part. iTunes also has its own digital rights management measures that are difficult to get around as well. I am not going to advise you not use iTunes because it is a useful program. What I do want to advise is that you not use iTunes as your primary music library on your computer because if you want or need to convert them again or use them in another context you may find it difficult to do so.

Good luck and best wishes,
Bill Mikkelsen

I am using iTunes 4.7.

My machine is a homebuilt Intel P4 and Windows XP Pro.

My burner is a Memorex 4x DVD-R/RW multiformat.

What I do each time I purchase music from the iTunes store is create an audio CD of the music, wheter it is one track or an entire album using a CD-R/W disc. I know, some of you are saying "a CD-R/W disc? That can't be done!" I believe this burner does it because it is a fairly new burner. I don't really care, it just does it...

However, once the music is downloaded I create a new playlist, then I right click the play list and click the "Burn to playlist disc". After the playlist is burned I immediately rip it back to iTunes as a 192kbps MP3 and erase the disc using Windows XP Explorer.

Pretty easy, and cheap!

You lose the track information when you burn an Audio CD. You can keep the data by writing down all the tracks and artists on the CD then typing them back into dMC CDGrab. You can see if there is an option to write CDText which may work.

No, you need iTunes to play the song and for the person who bought the song to authorize your computer to play it.

Get that friend to convert it for you to mp3 or whatever non-protected format using all the methods described here. Assuming that friend has the actual license to the song.

Tunebite, Tunebite, Tunebite, Tunebite. I can't say it enough. Tunebite, Tunebite. Works great. Download for $11.99 USD, install it, and play your M4P files using Itunes. Tunebites converts it to OGG file as it plays. You can then change it to MP3 using any program that will will convert OGG.

Did you compose and record that song yourself?

You can't use somebody else's compositions on your web site without first obtaining their permission (which usually you won't get anyway), there's such a thing as copyright. This is stricter and not quite of the same nature as your right to copy and/or convert the file for your own needs.

If it's for your own personal use, just refer to the FAQ please, several procedures are explained right there, if you don't want to read this whole thread.

There are a lot of long winded ideas on this thread....why should we have to waste a CD every time we want to convert music WE HAVE PAID FOR into a decent usable format???

Anyway - the answer is buried in this thread:
http://www.hymn-project.org/

Forget the actual hymn software - download and install the iOpener program. Stupidly easy to use and works! I am using iTunes 4.7 and although it says it is not tested on this version I have had no problems unlocking my entire iTunes library. All .m4p files are now .m4a - and you can use dbPowerAmp (which, I might add is simply the BEST converter around) to convert to any format you bloody well want!! (You will need to download the appropriate codecs from the Codec Central link at the top of this page)

So, thank you hymn-project :komisch9: (you should read what this guy has to say on the legal & ethical issues of all this)

and thank you dbPowerAmp :komisch9:

This thread is long-winded because of a couple of annoying reasons:

1) People don't follow instructions and therefore continue to have the same problems.
2) People don't read the solutions offered before and post again therefore giving the impression that the solutions given previously didn't work, when in fact they weren't even tried, or were tried incorrectly.

The corollary is: Some people think theirs is a unique problem deserving a unique, personalized solution.

This thread has gone way out of control. There's a thread in the FAQ summarizing as much as possible the methods that appear to work for this.

This forum is equipped with a feature that shows seemingly similar threads. Sometimes the answer one seeks is right there, shown at the top and at the bottom of the forum, one has but to look up or down the page.

Convert them using JHymn converter. http://www.hymn-project.org/jhymndoc/
you might have to download JavaVM (there's a link to that on the jhymn download page).

Burning itunes to CD's and then importing them back in as MP3's is fine and dandy for songs, but that doesn't help with audio books because those files are to large for CD's.

Don't know if any one of you mentioned this but I found JHymn to work perfectly after pulling my hair out trying iOpener and the command-line Hymn. It is java based so should work on most platforms and can strip out the stuff that iTunes puts in the file (basically cleanse the file) but then you can insert your own hidden data or "atoms" as they are called for your own identification.

Oh and once the protection is stripped you should be able to convert it to MP3 if need be.

BTW, how many people here has noticed the static in the background of some of the songs purchased via iTunes. I don't know if the original CD had it though because I don't have a physical disc but I did notice static that may or may not of been part of the song. It was worse in some than others. The static transferred to the burned disc too so it wasn't a problem with my computer. It was either an encoding error on their end or the original source had this "static".

you can use a program called Audacity to record anyting that comes out of your computer in .WAV format. So if you were playing a song in iTunes, you can record the song to .WAV and then convert it to .MP3. They sound pretty good. The only thing is that you have to listen to the whole song and if you have mouse click or email notifier sounds and stuff you will hear that in the recording also. You can trim the ends of your recording to get rid of excessive quiet noise at the begining and end of your track. I downloaded Audacity from www.snapfiles.com.

hope this helps.

Well, I'm STILL using Jhymn, as I was when I posted on the subject two months ago, but after upgrading Itunes from 4.7 to 4.7.1 I found I had to upgrade Jhymn from 0.5.2 to 0.7.5 to scrub off the protection. The battle continues...

:vmad: I did everything exactly like you said, and after I burn the cd and go to audio cd and right click it says convert to AAC??????

In iTunes go Edit => Preferences

Select the Importing tab.

Select the file format you'd like to go to in the combo-box (AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3, WAV) Then you can select a custom setting or a pre-set one. Then click OK at the bottom of the window.

This should allow you to put in an audio CD, right click on a track (or multiple tracks) and you will see "Convert Selection to <your selection>."

Perhaps I'm just really energetic, but I didn't think it's that much of a problem to look through settings/preferences... do you? Try some troubleshooting on your own before you have to put up a post about what's not working... FAQs are great too...

Alternately there are other programs that will help you get your files to MP3s as well (JHymn for example)....

That is a problem that you do not have with Tunebite. Tunebite rerecords the music while playing that is cool because it is independend from the file format. So you have no problems with protected WMA, M4P, AAC or Napster. I have used other solutions before but now I am only using Tunebite. You can test Tunebite for free at

Yes you do, but sometimes you can burn CD-Text information to the CD and keep the track and artist information while using compatible players and burners.

Well, you hopping into two posts to advertise a program you have to pay for when there are free methods named in this post does seem to be spam.
As for "censorship", this IS a private board and we edit posts at our discretion. If you don't like how we do things, you can always leave.

Sorry guys if you took it too personal, but i was not advertising, I was just making a point...anyway, it's your right to do as you wish with the posts on this site, and i can totally understand that...hehehe, where are the good old days when the internet was a place for free discusions(I just hope i don't get flamed again for this line  )
Anyway, to get back to business, which one is that free software, that does this conversion legally ? Pls be so kind and tell, so that i can test it, cause I would gladly pay 0 $ for my music.

dMC is freeware, but lacks mp3 encoding after the PowerPack trial runs out. Also, dMC has a program included with it called "Auxiliary Input" that is used to record what your computer is currently playing or what is coming over the "Line-In" or "Mic" jack. You can use Aux. Input to record your DRM-protected songs as they are played.
Note that you have to be able to play these songs in order to do this and this means you purchased them.

those posts were looking spamish because in your very first 2 posts here on the forums you are advertising a program without entering into much of a discussion.

and as you can see i only removed the link and not all of your post to see if you came back. so it was the way you were posting that was suspicious
