Does anyone know of programs that can be used to transfer MP3s onto a sony netMD? I am having serious problems with the bundled software and there is this stupid check-in/check-out feature that limits the transfers onto the player.

BTW, the players uses the ATRAC3 codec to store files on the disk.

Note to Illustrate people : I see that your program supports mp3 players, how about including minidisks to that? ;)

most of what's out there (if not all) does it the same way as SonicStage & OpenMG , through a file conversion. Even the SonicStage supplied with ATRAC CD Walkmans follows the patterm (and that's even more crippled in choice than what's supplied for MD units).

So, unless anyone knows differently, it seems the only way to put an MP3 on a 'disk' and play it as a compressed file (i.e. not convert to CD Audio or Atrac) on a Sony ATRAC device is to buy an ATRAC CD Walkman and use any good burning software to create a CD ROM full of MP3's within the player's single level nesting restriction. For reference, you can't use the MD version of SonicStage with an ATRAC CD Walkman - a huge huge botch-up on the part of Sony.

I've just bought one and found the same problem (and what an awful prog thesonic stage is to use!). There must be an alternative! Or some friendly hacker could fix the 'check in/check out? (Please!)

My desire is to record live with mic or even from line sources onto MD, then download in digital onto PC to avoid the loss in quality that would occur if it has to be converted back to analogue and redigitised: but the 'checkin' limitation to files created on the particular PC prevents this. Stupid or what?!

Querise to Sony have merely brought bland meaningless excuses, when they bother even to answer.

I know the feeling... i've had problems with my NetMD player since the first day I got it. The software tha Sony bundles with this package is pure $hIt. But there are some alternatives: you can use the free version of RealOne player http://www.real.com/realoneplayer.html?pp=home&src=110303realhome_1_3_2_1_1 to transfer all the mp3's u want to your netMD with tags too at any quality (but u still have to install the OpenMG software; u just dont have to use it). The next alternative is WinMD. You can use this to "check in" as many tracks as you like to mp3 or wav, but it costs about 20$ to buy (it used to be freeware, until they got sued). Illustrate probably won't be able to make a MD/ATRAC3 codec because that software belongs to Sony and they will probably get sued if they make one:( lemme know if this helps

I received a message from Sony regarding dumping recorded live band music from the MD to the PC as follows:

However, the supplied OpenMG software is only for recording and managing audio off the Hard Drive of the PC and Checking in/out to a Portable Player only. Audio recorded onto the MiniDisc Recorder from the MIC/Line inputs can not be "Checked In" to OpenMG. SONY has not tested any third party software that has been designed to meet this requirement. We can neither recommend nor endorse any third party products for use with your unit.

If this path is of interest to you we recommend you check with your favorite computer retailer, major computer magazines, or search the Internet for available options.

I am hoping someone has a solution.

On a side note, i just read ..

"Write Sveta Driver for Neuros Audio + Saehan F35 + Mini disc"

If this has been started can we start testing it yet? i cant wait to rid myself of that horrid software that comes with the MD.

Cheers.

i found a gay assed problem in open mg. if you get a song and import it, then change the song and try to upload it onto your minidisk the minidisk will confuse the old music with the new music(if they are the same name) and will play the old song for ten seconds really choppily. I want to be rid of that gay software, i wish i could sue sony i spent 200$ on this thing.

I think the MD-technology is very interesting and that's why I discovered this site: www.minidisc.org. There you can find lot of information why it is impossible to upload music from MD to PC. Especially this (http://www.minidisc.org/NetMD_faq.html#_q82) part of the NetMD-FAQs describes it...

SPoon couldn't you just incorporate the ATRAC codec as one of the alternative codes for DBpoweramp? Here is the codec http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/11/1/2/11-1-2-187.shtml

Could that ATRAC codec be added only to work on a paid power packs? That way Illustrate would just pay Sony the fees for distributing the software... Only problem is getting that license :/ but I'd pay for it :D

That would depend on Sony licensing out the ATRAC format, which probably isn't going to happen except for an exorbant amount of money.
Also, please don't revive dead threads.
