View Full Version : editing metadata

If you ever rip classical music, you'll know that metadata for classical recordings is often (usually) wrong. Perfectmeta isn't bad, but I still need to edit the results occasionally. Having just got a RipNAS, I haven't discovered how to edit metadata after ripping. Sorry if there's a really simple answer to this question!

Either from a PC on your network (programs can access the music shares), or by opening a remote desktop connection to RipNAS then edit direct in RipNAS (select files >> Right Click >> Edit Tag).

Thanks for that! My problem now is that I don't seem to be able to get Asset to pick up the changes I've made. I've tried Refresh all and Restart, but the Linn GUI still dishes up the old version!

Linn GUI or Kinsky PDA? because the latter caches the listings internally.

I use both - and they both have the same problem. How do I flush the caches?

LinnGUI does not cache, Asset does not cache, so the problem is else where...

Have you tried restarting RipNAS? Which version of Asset is installed? (WHS Console >> Settings >> Asset)

It's Asset 1.1. I have restarted the RipNAS, but I'm still getting old data in LinnGUI and KinskyPDA.

One question. If I select "Rescan (Refresh All)" from within Linn GUI, how long should the "Rescanning shortly..." message remain on screen? It seems to stay there for ever.

The message 'Rescanning Shortly' will display forever.

If you rip a new disc, do the tracks appear?

Lets look at real example...

The disc I have just ripped is Carl Orff&*blooper*8217;s Carmina Burana performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Simon Rattle.

From within WHS RipNAS, I can see that PerfectMeta has identified the disc as Carmina Burana, but as performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Riccardo Muti, and it has retrieved the wrong cover art.

In Windows Explorer (I am running XP), I open \\Ripnas\Music and see an artist folder named Carl Orff containing the recording. Carl Orff is not the artist, he is the composer, so I create a new folder called Simon Rattle and move the Carmina Burana subfolder to that, changing the name from Carmina Burana (Muti) to Carmina Burana (Rattle). I open the folder, select all the tracks and edit the ID tags to show the correct artists names. I can&*blooper*8217;t be bothered to change the cover art!

Opening Linn GUI, I look under artist and find Simon Rattle, but selecting Album I find the recording is still called Carmina Burana (Muti).

Is it because Asset only looks at metadata and not folder names?

Asset does not use filenames at all, only metadata.

I've started getting the message "Power Pack required for ID tag editing". I had a trial copy of dBpoweramp in my computer before I bought a RipNAS - is this the problem? How do I restore full editing functionality?

Either from a PC on your network (programs can access the music shares), or by opening a remote desktop connection to RipNAS then edit direct in RipNAS (select files >> Right Click >> Edit Tag).

Maybe I am too stupid but where can I access "Edit Tag"? In Windows Explorer once in the RipNAS shared folder? I couldn't find this.
Thanks
Holger

Not from your PC, rather from RipNAS its self (you open a remote desktop connection to ripnas so you are using RipNAS as a 2nd computer).

Thanks, got it sorted with mp3tags now!

Apologies in advance - am very new to this all but how do I open a remote desktop connection via windows vista to my ripnas? I have tried the http://ripnas=pswd/tsweb but cannot get a connection that way. Alernatively can I edit the metadata via my pc? Have tried this also by renaming a file in the shared folders ,but this is not show in WHS console Any help which can be understood by a beginner would be grateully received::komisch9:
