View Full Version : Transcode flac to aac

I have ripped a large collection of CDs with dbpoweramp reference (V12) to flac.

I now want to duplicate this collection in .aac files for playback on the family iPod.

I've got a couple of questions. First, can dbpoweramp ref do the .flac to .aac transcoding and if so do I need any particular codec that would not be part of the original download I purchased?

Secondly, although I will playback the flac files with foobar, for ease of integration etc. I think (still not totally sure) I would like the .aac files to playback over iTunes. So do people think I should be transcoding the flac files into a separate directory or keeping flac files and aac files in the same directories?

In case that's not clear, my current directory structure is:

D:/Music/Artist/Album/flac files

what I want to know is should I go for:

D:/Music/Artist/Album/flac AND aac files

OR

D:/Music/Artist/Album/flac files AND D:/iPod Music/Artist/Album/aac files

Obviously now that I look at this I suppose I have a third question which is whether my directory structure (artist/album) gets maintained automatically....it would be a royal pain to recreate all that. I am looking for a totally automated transcoding process that I can let run overnight.

Thanks,

Dave M

You need the m4a Codec pack from codec central, convert to .m4a not .aac (iPod need the .m4a container containing aac).

First, you need the m4a codec and the FLAC codec from Codec Central, however I believe FLAC is included with the default Reference install.

As for the directory structure, you will need to use "Dynamic Naming". I believe the best option for you is to use [TRIMLASTFOLDER][TRIMFIRSTFOLDER][origpath][][]\AAC\[origfilename]
That should do what you want to. Use the "List\Rename" button before you convert to make sure it looks correct.
